Default 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky Autograph Policy ?

I saw this on eBay

1979 80 O Pee Chee 18 Wayne Gretzky Rookie RP BGS Auto Autograph JSA | eBay

The 1979 OPC Hockey Card ('tho the slabbing seems to lean toward it being a not authentic reproduction of the card) of Wayne Gretzky and is autographed, authenticated by JSA.

I thought I read that Wayne Gretzky refused to sign any of his 1979 OPC cards and signed one and only one that goes to his family (kids).

But that story was years ago, and maybe he changed his mind.

Does anyone remember that? If it's true, then much like this card is a reproduction, could it be possible the signature slipped through the JSA graders watch and be not authentic despite the authentication?

I remember even Paul Kariya re-telling that story and Paul supposedly did the same with his Upper Deck 1991 Czech World Juniors hockey card, not signing that card for anyone.

Card is an unauthorized reprint. Autograph is horrible.

I thought it looked odd, and I'd speculate since it's not a real OPC yet attempts to look like one (not an authorized reprint), that if presented to Gretzky to sign he could easily mistaken it for a real card and then refuse to sign it.

So, do you think this card was submitted to JSA and just passed the subjective eyes of the authentication process as being authentic and it probably isn't?

I'm not so much interested in buying this card than the legend of Wayne Gretzky's 1 of 1 Signed OPC he has for his kids only and stance not to sign any of 'em to make that one card special for the family.

Wayne Gretzky and later Brett Hull when presented with their rookie cards for signature were known to ask "Are you sure you want me to ruin your card?"

I haven't heard of Wayne turning down anyone for an autograph when he was signing.

he signs the card for sure, I have a reprint signed. he thought it was real. anyway, the signature looks good as well. I dont kow how many of you have actually met wayne, but when he signs in person, it is very sloppy like that. you never get a good in person signature from him. I have many examples of his signaure at home, if I have time tonight, I will upload examples, with exact proof of him signing the same items.

its like slabbing an index card or a custom card. The card itself is stamped "reprint" on the back and the slab says "unauthorized card"

We sold a Gretzky RC several years ago which we had authenticated by JSA and slabbed. The buyer was very happy to get it, even with a less-than-stellar autograph. Cardlover is right -- there is a Gretzky sig for every day of the week. Depends on the mood, the amount of time and whether he's getting paid or not, I think.
