Default Jonathan Toews The CUP "FAKE PATCH" AUTO???

I just ran across this auction on ebay. The seller clearly states that the card and auto are authentic but the patch has been modified and is FAKE. I have never seen this before. I guess my question is WHY would someone do this? I'm also wondering why there are 6 offers on this card at this point. I'd personally be irate if I found out somebody replaced the actual patch on my card, although this guy clearly acknowledges it in his auction. Any thoughts?

I was one of those who placed an offer. I have a couple of Toews Cup rookies already and I know this one has the altered patch, but I still think it's a nice card. Of course, I would want it on the cheap and this seller still wants $1k for it...they bought it not knowing it was altered, and they are just trying to recoup some costs.

For the record, here is what it used to look like:

I mean, I agree it's bad for the hobby, but with full disclosure, I don't see any problem with it.

really? it's an honest ebay seller with a modified, aka fake, patch card that's ruining card collecting?

it's got nothing to do with dishonest sellers, non-paying bidders, over-production, questionable relics (straight from the card companies), sticker autos, endless parallels, ever increasing prices, redemptions that never get filled, bogus beckett pricing, etc.

why report him? he's being honest. it's right there in the title and description. if someone buys it without knowing then they're an idiot. and if someone wants to buy it knowing that it's a fake, then let them.

Yeah, I agree. There's no need to report someone who's being completely open and honest about the item.

The card is in really rough shape. The new patch really doesn't help it in any way. Its still a tough sell at that price he is looking for. I don't blame him, but I wouldn't sell a doctored card, either.

I agree on this transaction but there's no guarantee every other seller will be as honest and eventually, I'm guessing some scammer will end up with this card and try to pawn it off to someone who doesn't know it's fake.

I guess I can see points on both sides of this discussion. It sucks that the seller got duped and I can see why he wants to try to get his money back, especially when there is obvious interest. But I guess in my personal opinion fake patches shouldn't be on the market. I agree that this particular seller is doing the right thing by being honest about it. The problem is if someone who is not as honest buys it, holds it for awhile then resells it as genuine to an unsuspecting buyer, you are right back in the same situation.

Not a big deal at all. It sucks that someone out there decided to mess with the patch, but what they really did was replace a manufactured patch with another manufactured patch. Sooo....
