Default eBay rapes a jerk :)

So
Lot of you know I went full money on the flip and dumped all of my baseball and do tobacco only now.
Well, with any collecting you find tangents and mine was Zippo lighters

So
I buy this
Smoke Signals tobacco Co. Zippo | eBay

Looks great when I get it in. Put it on the shelf.
Leave feedback and move on.
A week later I go to add fluid and flint and Lo and Behold.....Chinese insert instead of a zippo

I contact the seller, he says " Oh man, I will make this right, I will send you a new lighter" so that I was glad to hear.

45 minutes later " Hey man, you already left feedback, I am not going to send you a replacement, just mail it back for a refund"

Now, I do not want my money back,i want what I paid for. he offered to make it right and thats what I wanted.

Now i knew I had NO LEG to stand on,the guy offered a refund and that would be it,but I opened a dispute anyway

We went back and forth, he admitted he offered to replace it but decided he did not want to,would refund only. I mentioned the fact he said this after he realized I have left feedback and was therefore being an #@#@#@#@#@#@#@ ( Yes, I said that in my dispute,I didnt care :P )

he said too bad, send it back or go away.

2 weeks later the "Close case or escalate email" comes to me.
I escalate with the message
I only wanted what I paid for. He sold me a knock-off or at least a zippo that was in parts and he replaced it with Sub-Standard Chinese parts. he offered to give me a zippo insert but when he saw I had already left feedback, he saw no need to offer reasonable customer service and retracted his offer. I know you guys are going to give me the "Send it back for a refund" spiel, but I want it know this guy lacks integrity and has poor character

Well, 10 minutes ago I get this

We've decided to issue you a courtesy refund for this case on 23 Nov, 2011 to the PayPal account you used to purchase this item. The refund includes the purchase price plus original postage & packaging. Please log into PayPal to get your refund.

This case is now closed, but you can view the details of the case in the Resolution Centre.

Well, needless to say this is unheard of to me. I was floored. This was a case of a company actually seeing through policy to see that someone was getting jerked around and doing something about it.

2 minutes before I started posting this I got THIS :P

Enjoy the FREE lighter that you stole from me. Merry Christmas.

Some days....you just get what is right, not what you deserve

I told him I would trade him a Chinese Insert for a Zippo, but he wont reply now I bet

Tell him to send you what you paid for, and once received, you will then return the original with payment.

I did
I told him to send me the insert and I would send him his 10.49 back
But he's mad, he thinks i tricked him and got over on him with ebays help ;P
I mean, it is funny. He actually thinks I had done some magic trick to cause ebay to give me the money back without sending his item back.I was more blown away than he was. I told him to image how painful it would have been if it were a 500.00 item that he decided to not make good on after feedback was left.
Maybe he will learn from it
Myself, i will bend over backwards and go as far as losing money to assure that someone I sold something to is happy if the deal goes south because of something I did. Some people just do not care.

A "courtesy refund" means they didn't want to bother putting a claims specialist on the case to solve your $7 mystery. The seller lost nothing. Paypal just decided to refund you the $7+shipping instead of waste time dealing with the case. I've had this happen to me before...ebay/Paypal will issue courtesy refunds when they realize refunding the amount of money being disputed is cheaper than actually dealing with the case itself/unhappy buyers+Sellers. Seller loses $0, buyer gets money from eBay/Paypal and the item.

So the seller didn't really get "raped" considering he didn't lose any money, and I don't see how losing $9.50 would classify as getting "raped" anyways.

Why would you leave positive feedback before checking the item that he shipped.

That's what I thought also, but why would the seller says that he got the lighter stolen him without losing money? PayPal must have taken the money from him.

Probably to make it seem like the upset buyer got the better of the deal? I don't know. I suppose because he is notified by eBay, telling him that the buyer received a refund, maybe he thought they were taking the money from his account...
