It doesn't sound like you're going to get one at all but if you do, take it to the issuer and cash it. If it's a USPS MO, take it to the post office. If it's Western Union, take it to Western Union.

Exactly. Took Wells Fargo 9 days to bounce a counterfeit I received almost 2 years ago. Then of course they tacked on a $17 fee for depositing a fake item. And of course I had already shipped the card. That was the last and final time for me and money orders. Went Paypal only and life has been much simpler.

This is the only way to go. If it's fake, then it's on the issuer to collect money and/or eat the cost, not you (the recipient).

So I can't get in trouble for cashing out a bad money order?

I didn't have any issues other than the fee the bank tacked on. They even sent me a photocopy of the money order so I could prosecute or whatever I wanted to do.

Wait for the MO to come in and then decide what to do.

What king of funds are we talking here?

Before you cash it, call the issuing company and verify its a legit money order. Western Union should be able to tell you over the phone if its legit. Not sure you can do over the phone with the post office, but every one is in their computer system and they will verify before they cash it (this is the one I love as if they come back with it fake and you opened it there - they've got the mail fraud forms ready to go).

Just some advice as I use western union mo's and personal bank ones.
WU/MoneyGram have very specific numbers on the MO and the tear off at the bottom.
These are to confirm that your MO is yours in case it gets lost.
You can call them and verify the MO is real but not for the total amnt.
I always send MO's and tell the seller wait until they have cleared as its the only way anyone will take them.
Also if the total is less then 1000$ just send it as a WU wire!

Yeah this guy asked if he could send me a money order from canada I told him it made no sense for me to get the mo from him then send the cards to his brother in CA who will then send it to him.

I told him it made no sense and he never responded

I opened a Paypal case against him 2 days ago and upped it to a dispute today since I didn't get a response from him.
