Interesting development - FAKE Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone signatures?

Cowboy Cerrone ‏@Cowboycerrone 21h

I hate to say it but thats not my signature RT @Jerminate: Got another @toppscards printing plate red ink auto! pic.twitter.com/fCg7Sft4Rj

Follow him on twitter @cowboycerrone, saying some of his topps auto's were not signed by him, someone tweeted him showing a leaf card which he said he signed.

Topps Company ‏@toppscards 9h

Srt42004n 04-08-2013 12:37 PM

I could see topps doing something dumb...but I would expect it from leaf...we shall see.

seanho2309 04-08-2013 11:09 PM

That is 100% not Cowboy's signature. I have know Cowboy for some time and seen him sign millions of things, not 1 has ever looked like that.

Bryanjs14 04-09-2013 06:20 PM

More than likely yes, it's almost the same as the one in question. Hope topps responds to this ASAP

Desanto846 04-09-2013 06:51 PM

Look on ebay at Cowboy's sig's.

That auto in question isn't even a good fake. WOW

holy #@#@#@#@ man this is getting interesting....im kinda pissed that my 1/1 just might be fake !!!

cking 04-10-2013 06:04 AM

Wow,thats crazy. I know its Not Topps but remember Dez Bryant last year with the second batch of autos for Panini. And even worse Whitney Mercilus. Check out the Elite one.Elite is one of the first products to drop every year.

Now fast forward a few months to Prizm

How exactly does one go from having illegable childlike hand writing to almost perfect penmanship in a few short months? I totally understand the need to shorten ones auto due to the sheer volume they have to sign. But this is flat out not his autograph on the Prizm. I am no expert but I dont think it would be physically possible to improve ones handwriting that much in such a short period of time. Worst part is Panini dont even care.

I am not sure which scenario would be considered worse.

#1-The fact that they did not notice that his auto changed so drastically

or

#2-The fact that they did notice his auto changed so drastically and did not care and inserted them into packs anyway.

Pretty scary for the hobby as a whole and very, very scary for the future of the hobby. If the card companies dont care then its safe to say there wont be much help provided in the future if these issues should come to surface again. Thats very discouraging to say the least.

mma138 04-10-2013 07:29 AM

wow this is realy bad. topps better have a answer for this

aharm84 04-10-2013 10:16 AM

very interesting. i made a thread a few months ago about how the topps bloodlines overeeem signatures also look nothing like his leaf autos or the 2012 ud goodwin autos he signed.

sthoemke 04-10-2013 03:39 PM

That's the problem with sticker autos.

The card companies mail sheets of stickers for athletes to sign and mail back, so there is no oversight over who actually signs the stickers.

Honestly, sending a box of cards for the athlete to sign is just as problematic.

On one hand, you could certainly blame the card companies for not having a representative on hand to witness every signing. Although that would add costs and those costs would be passed on in the form of charging higher prices for products. On the other hand, you could just as easily blame the athletes who personally (or via their representatives) don't sign like they are contractually-obligated to do. I mean, I'm sure they had no problem signing the checks they received for "signing" those autographs.

mma138 04-11-2013 08:55 AM

but the ufc auto should be easily acquired. it shouldnt be hard for a topps rep to show up at a ufc ppv event . they could easily get a number of the athletes to sign on that day . not only would they get the autos of the fighters that are fighting that day , but other fighters show up at these events .

ensbergcollecto 04-11-2013 09:12 AM

my question is, if it wasn't cerrone, he should at least know who signed it. if the stickers were mailed to his house, and then mailed back to topps, who is responsible? Or am I missing a step? I mean, this is topps, kings of redemptions. It isn't like they didn't get cerrone's autos back in time and just thought "oh well, we better forge these."

Do you think these guys (and women) would be willing to sit down and sign hundreds/thousands of autographs on the same day they are fighting? I'm not familiar with what those athletes do in the final hours leading up to their fights.

No, they would not. Ive been backstage at multiple fights, ive been in the fighter locker rooms before and after fights, I've also hung out with a fighter the morning of the fight at breakfast and then while he went to do some press that morning. Believe me, the only thing on their minds is that fight, and they want as little contact as possible.

Most of these guys when they are not in fight mode are some of the BEST athletes in the world when it comes to interacting with fans though. You name a fighter, I have prob met them and 95% of them are incredibly gracious to fans. I've seen Forrest Griffin get mobbed in a hotel lobby (with his suitcase in tow), and literally stand in one spot for NINETY minutes and sign autos and take photos until every single person got one.

yeah ok , your right . but we know that athletes some times change up there signatures . but if cowboy says its not his ? then this is bad .

mma138 04-12-2013 09:56 AM

so what is the response from topps ?

sthoemke 04-13-2013 02:21 AM

It's strange that the fake auto seems to only show up on 1/1, plates, and #/8 cards.

How could, or why, the fake auto only show up on the rarest of the auto cards?
