It Really Is “A Piece of History”
Upper Deck’s “Hair Cuts” insert cards are making collectors wig out North Las Vegas, NV – (August 8, 2008) – It’s no secret that Upper Deck is the leader when it comes to producing innovative trading cards. Whether it was the first autograph cards or the first game-used jersey cards inserted in packs, the company has led the industry with creative ideas to bring collectors closer to the game. Now Upper Deck is bringing collectors closer to history with the company’s new “Hair Cuts” insert set. There are no jerseys of such famous personalities like Napoleon Bonaparte or Andrew Jackson. There are very few autographs of them as well. But there are even less known authentic locks of their actual hair. Upper Deck recently procured locks of hair from 15 historical figures to be encapsulated on trading cards. And some lucky collectors will have the opportunity to own these cards by finding exchange cards in packs of 2008 Upper Deck A Piece of History Baseball. That’s right; it’s now possible to own a real piece of history by just opening up packs. Upper Deck began sending these cards to eager collectors last week and they have generated tremendous interest amongst collectors. Only weeks prior, Upper Deck also created a “Hair Cuts” insert in 2008 SP Legendary Cuts Baseball that included not only an encapsulated piece of hair, but also an authentic signature from such legendary personalities as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Many of these “Hair Cuts” cards were on display last week at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago. Dave Sliepka of Beckett Auctions said, “Interest in the Lincoln autograph hair card we had on display from 2008 SP Legendary Cuts was tremendous. Card collectors really like the uniqueness the hair brings to the trading card.” Beckett is auctioning off the Lincoln card currently with the auction set to end August 17 at Beckett Media, LP - Slapshot. With sales of many of these cards going for hundreds and frequently even thousands of dollars, they seem to be a hit. The only problem is there is only so much known authentic hair available for these figures. In the collectibles industry however, that is a good thing. Lucky recipients of these cards have a truly limited collectible. As Upper Deck reported before its 2008 Upper Deck A Piece of History Baseball launched, there was a printing error on the exchange cards for the “Hair Cuts” inserts that reported they were signed. In actuality, the exchange cards feature the historic figures’ actual hair instead of a signature. |

So am I mistaken or didn't Topps do the hair card first in last year's A&G? Do the hype people that write this bull crap think that we're all just complete and utter fools? __________________ Dusty I collect Justin Morneau NeedMoMorneau.com |

The whole part about "first autos, first GU, now the hair-cut cards" implies they are first with the hair cards when we all know they were not. It is either an outright lie in the way they are promoting this product or it is a horribly written paragraph........possibly on the level of this one!!

Geez...are you a UD plant? Not many people have the time to read each word, analyze it, and interpret it. It's intuitive for some people...but for most, nobody is going to spend the time to diagram the freaking sentences like we all did in grammar school to figure out what they are "really" saying. Tk |

It's a shame you struggle with reading comprehension. And then blame your 'intuition' for misreading plain English. Most of us can read without diagramming sentences, what they are 'really' claiming is that they are innovative and a leader, not that they created hair cards. Sorry if that's over your head. Next you'll be telling me that flying the skies with United isn't really 'Friendly.' OMG! :O |

I remember a few years back when the whole "Hair Card" idea was a joke....along with the "player-picked booger" card, the "player-spit sunflower seed" card, & the "O.J. Simpson murder-used glove"...it's a bit pathetic after all these years this is thier best attempt at a new "innovation".
