Trading card manufacturers are always searching for the next big thing — at least something that might have a big impact on the company’s bottom line — and both Upper Deck and Panini America are teasing something to come soon.
For Upper Deck, it’s the Evolution of collecting as teased above to come on April 12 via a new insert card in 2011 Upper Deck Football.
What that means right now? We get to wait and see.
“It’s highly proprietary and we’re not at liberty to discuss the details just yet,” said Jason Masherah, Upper Deck’s vice president of Marketing. “But suffice it to say that this upcoming unveiling will once again revolutionize the trading card industry as we know it today, in a way that only Upper Deck is capable of doing.”
Panini America is promising later this week to unveil the industry’s first HD video trading card.
What will these things entail? How will these things work?
One might speculate that they’ll use QR codes on trading cards working in conjunction with smartphones or computer webcams, but that’s merely a guess.
For now, we’ll just have to wonder what the two companies think The Next Big Thing is.
We’ll find out — and get to decide as collectors — soon.

They did E-Volve in 2000. It was a cool insert set. Bring that back.
“Life is a storm, my young friend. You will bask in the sunlight one moment, be shattered on the rocks the next. What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine! Then the fates will know you as we know you.”
