SportsCardNation.com: SportsCardNation.com Weekly Update (1/2/2009)
Friday, January 2, 2009
HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of our SCN members. We have a lot of exciting promotions and new content planned for 2009 here at SCN. 2008 was a great start and a kickoff of our website, but 2009 WILL BE EVEN BETTER! Look for more promotions, giveaways, partnerships and, most important, MORE CONTENT AND INSIDE NEWS to help you, the card collector.
Here's what is going on this week:
The hottest product in the market is by far 2008 Playoff Prime Cuts Baseball. Shops and distributors are scrambling for more. Boxes, cases, and singles are sky high on ebay. We can see these at $250+ packs and $4000 cases one day. This is the type of item that will slow down as prices get too high but will continue to sell a year from now at high levels. As a collector, you're much better off taking a shot at a $200 pack of Prime Cuts than you are at buying 4 boxes of another product at $75. Think of your chances of hitting a $1000 card in a $75 box compared to your chance of hitting a $1000 card from a Prime Cuts pack. Not to say all high end products are better to bust than lower end, but for Prime Cuts, we at SCN think the risk/reward is worth it.
As Prime cuts has moved up and over the $3K mark, a lot of buyers have moved to 2008 Topps Sterling Baseball now as the price point alternative and potentially better bang for the buck at the $2K price point. The Player boxes are reported better this year for a product that has done very well the past 2 years. It seems Topps Sterling was over shadowed by Prime Cuts last week but should sell well going forward.
We are hitting the point in January through March where there are fewer releases. Manufacturers are also decreasing print runs on every new release across the board. This makes for a perfect storm for quality products that are under-ordered to spike upon release. We are already seeing a increase in interest on products such as 2008 Topps Mayo Football, 2008/09 Topps Murad Basketball, 2008 Playoff National Treasures Football, and 2008 UD SP Authentic Football. Keep an eye on a few new releases that are starting to get attention: 2009 Topps Heritage Baseball, 2009 Playoff Contenders Baseball (yes, we did say Baseball), and 2009 Razor Letterman Baseball.
One sad topic that we feel a need to remind all our members is concerning the Ponzi schemes that seem to pop up on ebay every few years. We at SCN constantly monitor ebay to provide the content for our website. We've been doing this for over 10 years and understand that some of you in the past have been burned by certain sellers on ebay. SCN remembers in the past 2-5 years of the scams coming out of TX, OH, NY, WI, and ME. Many of you who purchase cases may have been hurt in these scams. We bring this up now because as times get tough, people get desperate on ebay, selling products at or below factory direct cost months before they are released.
Here's our simple advice. If the price is too good to be true, it usually is. Even with good feedback, many of the past scammers had built their feedback up to over 10,000+. One of the biggest signs is when they offer you a cash discount to purchase a case direct from them outside of ebay. Always go through PayPal or use a credit card. Otherwise, once the Ponzi scheme ends, you will be out the money if you send them a check. Sellers try to get you by delivering the items early on and then gain your trust as you place larger and larger orders. Before you know it, that $1000 order becomes a $5000 order at a great price and then they are gone. It has happened many times in the past and, without mentioning names, we see the same evidence of it again happening soon. The manufacturers are already on top of this and are keeping a close eye on these few sellers.
Once again, make sure you pay by PayPal or credit card. Also realize that PayPal payments may only have a 30-45 day period so if they presell you something that is 2-3 months out, you may still be out of luck. We just felt a need to point this out as many of you have written to us about recent sellers selling below factory cost and how they could presell hot new products below factory direct cost. Buyers beware.
On to other news:
Now that we are in the Football Playoffs, we note that the strongest run in Football prices is usually in the January to March time frame. Although the season ends in January, Football tends to sell strong through March and even into the April Draft. That is just the way it is and has been the past 6-8 years. We expect the same this year. We expect a lot of these late products to do well and are hearing rumors that 2008 National Treasures Football will be loaded with Prime Cuts type pulls. We will just have to wait and see. We are also hearing about added content in 2008 Playoff Contenders Football.
2008 Topps Chrome Football should make a big swing up with all the potential in the 2008 Class. This may be one of the best bets out there at current levels. We at SCN recommend picking these up now and putting them away. We see a move upcoming that should take these over $600+ again. 2008/09 Topps Chrome Basketball remains strong. 2008 UD Ultimate Collection Baseball will be out soon and looks like it may also spike up.
The following products are tough to find and should move higher:
2008 Bowman Sterling Football
2008 Topps Letterman Football
2008/09 Topps Letterman Basketball
2008/09 UD Black Hockey
2008 Topps Stadium Club Baseball
2008 UD SP Rookie Threads Football
