SportsCardNation.com: SportsCardNation.com Weekly Update (1/9/2009)
Friday, January 9, 2009
We have 2 very good products this week. 2008 Playoff Contenders Football is not that big of a surprise as Contenders sells well every year. What bodes well for Contenders is: 1- Sold out at the factory. 2 - Better pull ratios on the big name Rookies than ever before which leads us to believe the print run is much much smaller than in the past. 3 - Low numbering of the Rookie Autos are much lower than in the past. 4 - Always a guessing game as to the actual print run of each rookie which leads to a lot of speculation on the product. 5 - Strong rookie class. We think that 2008 Contenders Football will not only move higher but will sell well for months to come. You could see $120 a Box soon.
2008 UD Ultimate Collection Baseball is the huge surprise. UD is sold out and distributors did not order this one at all. Supply is short in the secondary market. The early breaks show that the pulls are much better than the past 3 years. UD basically decided to load this one up and caught everyone off guard. It happens. We can see boxes running up to $100 by Baseball season.
Here's what is going on this week:
The next 3 months are going too be VERY light as far as new releases. It is the time of the year where older products start to run up in value, newer releases with decent content run up, and products with no content stay stable. That's just the way it is. Here's how the cycle works. 1st quarter (Jan-March) is always the strongest part of the year. Why? Because no one ordered these products back in the 4th quarter of the previous year when products were tanking. 2nd quarter (April-June) starts off strong but then dies a quick death. Why? Taxes first of all. The drop off is quick once May hits. And second, everyone over orders during the 1st quarter's strong sales. They get over-excited since sales are great from Jan-March and by the time the 2nd quarter products come in, they are dead on arrival. 3rd Quarter (July-Sept) slowest time of the year. Everyone's out doing other things but. for some reason, collectors order big towards the end of the summer. A lot of it is speculation and excitement over the new Football season. Plus there is anticipation for the upcoming holiday season. For whatever reason, people get excited and over order during the end of the 3rd quarter. What does that mean? 4th Quarter (Oct-Dec) too much product in the market. A great holiday season still can't suck it all up. Manufacturers pump out as much product as they can before the year ends. Most product get killed. No one pre-orders the upcoming products for the 1st quarter. First quarter rolls around and since very little was ordered, production #'s are low. Many of the best high end Football products hit the market. New releases surge. That's a quick summary.
With all that said, Topps & UD have both come out this week announcing sellouts of numerous products. They are: 2009 Topps Heritage Baseball, 2009 President Obama Cards, 2008-09 Topps Hardwood Basketball, Wacky Pack Flashbacks 2, 2008-09 Topps Chrome Basketball, 2008 Bowman Sterling Baseball, 2008 Topps Mayo Football, 2008 Topps Triple Threads Football, Topps American Heritage, 2009 Topps Baseball Series I, 2008-09 Topps T-51 Murad Basketball, 2009 UD Spectrum Baseball, 2008 SP Authentic Football, 2008 Ultimate Collection Baseball, and 2008 Ultimate Collection Football.
2008/09 Basketball products are moving higher. Topping the run up are: 2008/09 Topps Chrome, 2008/09 Bowman Draft, 2008/09 Topps Treasury, and 2008/09 UD SPX. Watch these to continue to move higher as it is obvious now that production was cut or made to order on these products. 2008 Topps Chrome Football continues to move higher along with 2008 Bowman Sterling Football, 2008 Bowman Chrome Football, 2008 UD Ballpark Baseball, 2008 UD SPX Baseball, 2007 & 2008 UD Legendary Cuts Baseball.
On the presell front, we think the following will push higher: 2008 Playoff National Treasures Football, 2008 UD SP Authentic Football, 2008 Topps Mayo Football, 2008/09 Topps Hardwood and Murad Basketball, and 2009 Topps Heritage Baseball.
