SportsCardNation.com: Weekly Update (1/16/2009)
Here is what's going on this week. Only 2 new products for this week. SPX Hockey should be a decent seller but nothing great to write about. The biggest movers in this market are all the presells. Everyone, including distributors, ordered small and most products coming out in the next 3 months are already announced sell outs at the manufacturer level. Do we believe they are actually sold out? Who knows? BUT it is almost impossible to get products that are stated as sellouts so the secondary market prices have been moving up at a feverish pace. The following are a list of items that we believe will continue to move higher due to the lack of supply:
2008 Razor Cut Signature -Oval Office Edition
2009 Topps Baseball Series 1
2009 Upper Deck Spectrum Baseball
2009 Topps Heritage Baseball
2008/09 Topps Hardwood Basketball
2008/9 Topps T-51 Murad Basketball
2008 Topps Mayo Football
2008 Playoff National Treasures Football
2008 UD SP Authentic Football
2008 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Football
2009 Topps American Heritage
This list will probably continue to grow as the manufacturers start receiving orders from distributors who do not want to miss out on the next items. So how does this affect the market? It is pretty simple. New products will move higher to the point where breaking them will no longer become a value. For example, 2009 Topps Heritage Baseball is usually a great break at the $650 price. It is no longer a great break at the $750 price. What will happen is that collectors will then focus their money on the slew of products that are 25-50% off their highs from 2006-2008. When the economy is bad and you want to still open products, those are the ones to break. The downside risk is mostly gone and the content for the most part is still the same as what you get in 2009. It is like buying stock. As much as everyone wants the Hot IPO, it's the beaten up names that are a bargain at 1/2 off. This is the way the market has been shifting and is shifting over the next 6 months. Closeouts and products in the past are the way to go.
Here are the products this week that have dried up and may make a move higher:
2008 Playoff Prime Cuts Baseball
2008 Playoff Contenders Football
2008 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Baseball
2008/09 Topps Chrome Basketball
2008/09 Bowman Draft Picks Basketball
2008 UD Ultimate Collection Baseball
2008 Topps Letterman Football
2008 Leaf Certified Football
2008/09 Topps Basketball
2008 Topps Allen Ginter Baseball
2008 Topps Triple Threads Baseball
2008 Topps Heritage Hi # Baseball
