(NBA JAM SESSION AND MORE PROMOTIONS FOR CARD SHOPS)
In what has become a standard promotion card companies are offering to card shops around the country, Topps is doing a throw back series with cards offered in exchange for purchasing packs. This is not dissimilar to Turn Back the Clock and Rookie of the Week. At the All-Star Jam Session Topps will release a really interesting series of Mystery Cards in a folder. Wrapper redemptions, stopping by the Topps booth and saying hello are all part of the event for Topps. (Cool versions of the NBA Jam Session cards.) The cards feature five different players in the 1981 format which produced the Julius Erving and Magic Johnson/Larry Bird RC's. The new players will be Wade, Paul, Arenas, Anthony and Jianlian. In another move the NBA, using both partners Upper Deck and Topps, is going a step farther. A program designed to run during the spring offers collectors five different cards running up through the NBA Playoffs. The idea is to get collectors to enter the store, buy a few packs and get the cards in return. "This is a great promotion because it will promote excitement, entice people to purchase cards and increase sales of NBA trading cards," said Lisa Goldberg, NBA director of trading card licensing. "It is easy for shops and everybody gets something just for participating." Goldberg pointed to the fact hobby shops will recieve Gift Certificates can be used by customers to use in their store. The NBA will cover the cost. Basically once collectors/fans complete the five card set they are eligible to recieve prizes from UD and Topps as well as the Gift Certificates. Drawings for grand prizes include a trip to the NBA Photo Shoot and an instore signing with a player. Stores hoping to participate can find out more NBA.com: Official Home Page of National Basketball Association or go to the project website www.nba.com/starting5promotion. -The Brill Report |
