Default Sports memories to be auctioned - Ozzie Smith

Sports memories to be auctioned - Ozzie Smith

MARYLAND HEIGHTS Ozzie Smith kept the Gold Gloves and other special mementos of his great career. The rest of the sports memorabilia still gracing his former restaurant goes on auction this Sunday.

There is plenty for sports fans to choose from, or at least dream about: Autographed jerseys from Kurt Warner, Isaac Bruce, Brett Hull and other big names. Photographs and paintings of Ozzie doing his acrobatics at shortstop. A Big Red helmet signed by Jackie Smith.

There's also a poster-sized reproduction of a Saturday Evening Post cover of May 15, 1954, portraying Stan Musial signing autographs from the dugout. The framed illustration bears Musial's own autograph and a newsstand price of 15 cents.

"It'll go for better than that," said auctioneer Bill Cockrum.

Another non-Ozzie item for which Cockrum expects big things is an autographed photo of Enos Slaughter sliding across home plate after his dash from first base for the winning run in Game 7 over the Boston Red Sox in the 1946 World Series.

Cockrum's company has been hired to liquidate the movable assets in Ozzie's Restaurant & Sports Bar at Westport Plaza, which closed Friday after a 21-year run. Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Cockrum's BCL Auction will sell the restaurant equipment beer glasses, ladles, plates, flat-screen TVs, unused bottles of ketchup, tables and stools. The second call at 10 a.m. Sunday will be for sports gear, including anything bearing Ozzie's name, even the big neon signs outside. Both sales take place at the restaurant.

On Monday, Cockrum's crew was busy stacking drink glasses and cooking pots for sale. The glass case near the entrance that held some of Ozzie Smith's 13 Gold Gloves was empty. Some of the photographs already had been taken from the walls.

One possible item for sale is part of a wall a mural of Ozzie Smith, Stan Musial, Lou Brock and other Cardinals' greats. Cockrum said workers are trying to figure out how to remove it without damaging the property.

That's a touchy issue. Golub & Co. of Chicago, the owner of West Port, has a lawsuit pending against the operator of Ozzie's restaurant for at least $185,000 in allegedly overdue rent. Local restaurateur Ramon Gallardo's G&H Management Inc. is the defendant in that case, which is set for trial in St. Louis County Associate Court on Oct. 26.

Gallardo said Monday that auction proceeds will go to his bankers. "We won't see a penny of it," he said.

In April, G&H filed suit against Golub, accusing the landlord of having provided misleading information in 2006 about plans for Albert Pujols' restaurant, Pujols 5 Westport Grill.

Gallardo said Monday that competition from Pujols 5 "and other restaurants" led to closing Ozzie's.
