Beckett Blog Monday Morning Collector: NFL Week 8

Every Monday morning throughout the NFL season, weíll select our rookie, veteran and breakout player of the week and provide a run down on why collectors should take notice. Here are our selections for NFL Week 8.

Veteran of the Week:
Chris Johnson, RB, Titans
(228 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns)
Johnson is putting up monstrous rushing numbers on a very poor team. The 228 yards on the ground he recorded Sunday vaulted Johnson into first place for the 2009 NFL rushing title. If Johnson is able to maintain this pace for the second half of the year, heíll log nearly 1,900 yards on the season.

Considering the Titansí woes in the passing game. they are sure to rely on their running game to carry them the rest of the way. Remember that the pass often sets up the run so if they canít throw then they may not be able to run either. But theyíll have to give all of their running backs plenty of carries since the Titans just canít do much else offensively.

Collectors were all over Johnson Rookie Cards last season, so prices on them are already fairly high. Donít expect a lot of upward potential unless he makes a serious run at a 2,000-yard year. Johnsonís proven to be one of the top backs in the league again this year, so shedding the sophomore jinx indicates that heís the real deal.

Cards to Grab:
2008 Absolute Memorabilia #276 RPM AU/299 RC ($60)
2008 SP Authentic #288 JSY AU/999 RC ($100)
2008 Topps Triple Threads #108 JSY AU RC/89 ($80)

Breakout Player of the Week:
Ted Ginn, Jr., WR, Dolphins
(2 kickoff return touchdowns)

Despite losing his starting job at receiver, Ginmmc8ginnn found a way to make a positive impact for the Dolphins on the road against the New York Jets on Sunday by returning two kickoffs for touchdowns. Both returns spanned 100 yards or more and occurred in the same quarter. Thatís the first time since 1967 that a player has had two kickoff return touchdowns in the same quarter. What will this do for Ginnís cards?

There could be a slight spike in activity this week but donít expect it to last unless Ginn can continue his assault on special teams. Itís rare for a player to attract much hobby heat as a kick returner, but it can be done. Years ago, Deion Sanders gained great fame initially as a return man extraordinaire and in the 1990s Dante Hallís cards were hot after scoring on a number of kick returns.

Cards to Grab:
2007 Finest Rookie Autographs #130 ($25)
2007 Leaf Rookies and Stars #215 AU/99 RC ($50)
2007 Upper Deck Premier #162 JSY AU/199 RC ($50)

Rookie of the Week:
mmc8mccoyLeSean McCoy, RB, Eagles
(82 yards rushing, 1 touchdown)

With Brian Westbrook out, McCoy was given the chance to start for just the third time in his rookie campaign. Early in the fourth quarter on Sunday, McCoy broke off a 66-yard touchdown run to ice the game for the Eagles against the division-rival Giants. Itís uncertain how long Westbrook will be out, but with a long history of missing time due to injury, weíre likely to see more of McCoy in the seasonís second half and that can only help attract additional interest to his Rookie Cards.

2009 Bowman Chrome Rookie Autographs #120 ($N/A)
2009 Donruss Elite Turn of the Century Autos/200 #160 ($40)
2009 SP Threads #256 AU/120* RC ($N/A)
