Default Man looks to unload 1.2 million sports cards

Man looks to unload 1.2 million sports cards

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -- (01/04/10)--A Mid-Michigan man has a big problem. He needs to sell the baseball cards he's been collecting for the past 25 years.

The trouble is he has more than one million of them.

If you have a favorite baseball player from the 1980s or 1990s, chances are his card is somewhere in a local man's boxes.

Through the years Nick Ramsey would buy batches of sports cards from dealers and friends until he ended up with about 1.2 million cards.

"It's just been a great hobby I've always done. It's hard to finally let go but it's time," he said.

Ramsey recently listed his collection on CraigsList.

So how much space do 1.2 million cards take up? A wall about 18 feet long and about 8 feet high. Usually it's spread out on the garage floor.

"They're all over and you can't even get into the garage because he sets them everywhere," said wife Elizabeth Ramsey.

"She keeps telling me every time I buy more cards: 'I thought you were done with cards. I thought you were moving on,'" Nick Ramsey said.

"It does take up a lot of space. It doesn't do anything for me," Elizabeth Ramsey said.

The collection is about 80 percent baseball cards with some football, basketball and hockey thrown in for good measure.

Ramsey says he's probably only looked at 3 percent of the cards. But the ones he has seen read like a baseball's who's who.

Ramsey was laid off recently and could use some extra money. How much is the collection worth?

"They usually sell for 10 cents a card, times 1.2 million. That would be about $120,000," Ramsey said.

Ramsey isn't sure what hobby he'll take up next, but it's safe to say it probably won't be something quite so voluminous.

10 cards for a penny is more like it - if he's lucky.

$1200 < $120,000

If you look at the craigslist ad he is selling them for alot less. 10,000 cards for $65. That works out to .00065 per card.

"Up for sale is an entire sports card collection of around 1.2 million sports cards. This collection will have cards from Baseball, Football, Basketball and Hockey. I was told that at least 85% was baseball. I have only looked through about 3% of this collection. Of that 3%, I have already found Many stars, inserts, rookies and premium cards
REMEMBER WILL SPLIT THIS UP. SO IF YOU JUST WANT 1000 CARDS OR ALL 1.2 MILLION CARDS, GIVE ME A CALL

I WILL SELL THEM IN LOTS OF 10,000 FOR $65.00
"

If it is legitimately 1.2 million cards he is not even asking 1/2 a cent.

Blasphemy. CardshopMD has made millions on Ebay and should be considered the greatest businessman of all time. We should model the entire economy after his business model and philosophies.

/end sarcasm

Might not be a bad deal for someone who could do local pickup to go buy several 10,000 card lots. Probably won't find a gold mine but couldbe some decent stuff from the early 80s(pre-86) pop up.

If anyone is interested in the same deal and wants to pick up cards in Minnesota, let me know. I can sell 10,000 cards for $65 all day long.

$65.00/10,000 cards = $0.0065/card

Your math is off. So it is just over half a cent per card.

Damn that's a lot of cards, I bet 99% of them are commons lol. Sounds like this old guy I know who sells a bunch of old cards at ridiculous prices, all common early 90's upper deck sets, I hate those cards!
