BREAKING NEWS: NFL Properties Announcement - No Renewal for UD
NFL Properties Announcement - No Renewal for UD

Just a quick heads up, but UD was unable to renew its football card license with NFL Properties for the 2010 NFL season.

A formal press release will be forthcoming from the NFL, but just wanted you to know about it.

And just in case you’re looking for a statement from UD, here’s a quote that you can attribute to Richard McWilliam, Upper Deck’s CEO and Founder:

“Over the past year, Upper Deck has attempted to negotiate a new licensing deal with NFL Properties. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were not able to reach agreeable terms, and therefore will not be issuing any NFL Properties-licensed trading cards for the 2010 season. Upper Deck will continue to focus on its exclusive license agreement with the Collegiate Licensing Company and co-exclusive agreements with NHL Enterprises and the NHL Players’ Association, as well as its multiple entertainment licenses.”

The have it, its called The Cup. About the only thing UD does right on a consistent basis.

Man, UD is finally getting it. Problem is, McWilliam wont be terribly impacted considering he back doors tons of goods. Was proven with Yu Gi Oh was a scumbag he is. Its no wonder these major organizations such as MLB, NFL and NBA want nothing to do with this goon.

mwheeler27 04-07-2010 08:38 PM

I'm so happy to see others finally waking up to upper deck's nonsense.

A few months ago, I was disappointed they were allowed to remain in business. I was hoping for cease and desist orders. However, this is so much better. It's like a slow, painful death for ud. As others have said, "they deserve it".

Good! Couldn't happen to a better company

mswift69 04-07-2010 09:16 PM

Well if you want sticker autos and weak patches and terrible customer--that is what you are going to get now since the best company(UPPER DECK) is out of the picture

Brandt504 04-07-2010 09:22 PM

You guys do realize that with no competition out there this hobby is just going to go downhill right?

psutree 04-07-2010 09:27 PM

Will there be 2010 SPX football??

cruiserdaddy7 04-07-2010 09:32 PM

Hey mswift,
How do you even act like UD has good customer service? Anyone on here will tell you UD has the WORST customer service of all time. Its not even a close comparison. Im hoping you were being sarcastic but your love for UD in other posts says otherwise. Nothing like opening high dollar products, pulling redemptions and never getting the cards. Then you call this wonderful company called Upper Deck and they lie and cheat you for another year or two and you never get the card. Sounds great. Later Dick McWilliam, we wont miss ya.

I guess you didn't read the part about NO 2010 Products will be issued

What I realize is that letting unethical, counterfeiting card companies to continue to produce questionable cards will allow the hobby to go downhill at an ever accelareting rate.

Upper deck does not deserve to ever produce another card again. They are very lucky they still have followers, although for the life of me, I can't figure out why.

I bet with this news products like Exquisite with at least one redemption per box are going to slow down to nothing. How is UD going to honor these and other products with redemptions. By dumping all there old stuff on everyone. At this point. I don't think they will care. You might here their customer service people say after it's official. "Hey" You get what we are sending you. Take it or leave it. And what can you do about it.

My advice. You pull a redemption thats still redeemable. Sell it as fast as you can for as much as you can get for it.

I wonder if that means Topps will get the licensing back? Hope so. It would be a shame without chrome this year.

Oh well, more Prominent Cuts for UD. They should focus on some super hot history non-sport and do hollywood stuff. I'm not sure if NHL can save them.

n1nesports 04-07-2010 10:16 PM

I don`t think I EVER in my life bought a pack of football cards. I may have once from a candy machine if anything. But still, this is pretty crazy. Things are going very bad for UD. Wonder what their future holds.

Oh, I bet PANINI already making designs of their NFL cards already. lol. It's a good day for PANINI since I dont know who else can get a license.

No, they just recycle the same one 20 times over :)

S.U.I.Z.I.D. 04-07-2010 10:44 PM

Look at those UD fanboys. UD lost, get over it. PANINI will be the new king! Sticker autos, here we go!

wcbraun 04-07-2010 10:48 PM

What's the difference between NFL Players which announced last week that it renewed with UD and NFL Properties.

Is it actually the same and last weeks announcement was premature?

pskell02 04-07-2010 10:49 PM

To be honest with you, I would much rather have a product loaded up with stickers that looks half way decent and won't give you a kick in the teeth 9 times out of 10. Not to mention being from a company that has done nothing to make me (or anyone really) question their integrity. Prime example being the Exquisite break. Best card company out there my ass...

Its only a matter of time for companies like Press Pass and ITG to get a major license. They have some of the best stuff going, yet get very little love because they are not licensed. Which, IMO is a shame.

Rufusyo 04-07-2010 11:24 PM

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that panini is making an effort to get on card autos? NBA Contenders, Studio, and Classics have all had on card autos. Prestige even had on card autos in it. Panini listens to the consumer. UD didn't and that, among other reasons, is why they are where they are. People act like UD only had on card autos, give me a break.

I am against a monopoly, but I think Panini is making an effort to do it right.
