Default (1) Box - Famous Fabrics Music, Music, Music: A "Yankee Doodle Dandy"

Box # 2/1800

We'll discuss the memorabilia cards first:

Bruce Springsteen Concert-worn Shirt 11/90
Elton John Concert-worn Tie 1/5

And now the cut signature. George M. Cohan (1878-1942) is among the most enduring and prolific American composers. With standards such as "Over There", "Give My Regards To Broadway", "The Yankee Doodle Boy" and "You're A Grand Old Flag" to his credit, I could have done far, far worse. He's considered the father of American musical comedy and has his own bronze statue in Times Square, the only such statue on Broadway. I'll be sure to stop by and thank him when I start my new job in NYC. You film enthusiasts will be interested to know that Cohan's life was the basis for the 1942 biopic 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' starring James Cagney. FDR awarded Cohan the Congressional Gold Medal for his contribution to morale during the First World War, making him the first entertainer to be so honored.

The quote above his signature, "Woman is the Sunday of man" is attributed to French historian Jules Michelet (1798-1874). I believe this piece could have been cut from a 19th century book by J. De Finod titled "A Thousand Flashes of French Wit, Wisdom and Wickedness" in which Michelet's quote is entry #296. Of course this is only a guess.

I realize that major historical significance does not always translate to high value in this industry but I'd say I got my money's worth. As a musician I'm an admirer of his work and will be holding on to this item.

The relics however will be available. Hopefully there's a set-builder out there who needs a Springsteen and/or a Sir Elton.

Thanks for reading
