Default 1 Box Marvel Bronze Age, 1 Box Mars Attacks

I was curious about these two products so I ordered one box of each. They both get a big "meh" from me:

And the Mars Attacks "sketch" card:

I believe that's by Darin Radimaker (sorry if I mispelled his name).

That's a pathetic sketch. I didn't open any myself but from the breaks posted here Mars Attacks seemed very hit or miss.

Mail it to the artist who drew it. Maybe he'll get the hint.

Yep, I'd mail it to the artist and ask him to finish it. In my opinion, that's worse than a Waterhouse monkey.

For those who are actually interested this is the e-mail I sent him:

Quote:
Darin,

Hello, I recently stumbled upon your blog and thoroughly enjoy your art! I am incredibly impressed with your graphic design work -- especially in the Galaxy Note 10.1 post. I also really enjoy the planned perspective drawings on your site detailing the farmhouse in your Little Red Riding Hood panels.

I also appreciate the subtle framing of your blog with the windswept grass on the bottom and the gif of the boy pulling the kite out of the tree. It isn't obstructive or intrusive to your column and adds a nice personal feel to a normally plain and boring medium.

Also I was lucky enough to pull one of your sketches from my only box of Mars Attacks that I have ever bought. I love the idea and the setting -- a giant centipede rearing up and about to devour a farmhouse with a side of windmill :-)

But I was wondering if it would be possible for me to snail mail you the sketch in a one-touch hard case with $25 cash (I can also Paypal) and return postage so that you could flesh out the sketch a little more when you have free time? I totally understand if you're contractually unable to do this or if you plain just don't want to -- no hard feelings on my end.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and keep up the awesome work!
And his response:

Quote:
unfortunately I am contractually obligated however I do have some other returns to sell if you're interested
So it appears that that sort of work is off the table contractually with Topps ... too bad, I really do like his finished work!

I would have followed up with something along these lines:

"I understand completely. While the concept of this sketch card is commendable, for execution, I give it a F-, for being the sorriest excuse for a sketch card I, or anyone else, have ever seen. It should be posted on every Mars Attacks box, as a warning to buyers, that they may spend their money, and get a near worthless piece of cardstock. In fact, if it had been blank, it would have been a better pull than it was, because then I could have had someone draw something on there worth looking at."

But that's just me.

I agree with deathgate. The reason why people spend $50+ on card boxes is in hopes of pulling a really good sketch or a decent sketch at the least. If these sketch card 'artists' cant do the time then they have no business doing sketch cards for card companies.

I know its harsh but if I pulled that Mars attacks sketch....grrr

And what, precisely, would that accomplish?

Well, we've already established that the artist isn't going to do anything about it. It's called venting, and it's what one does when one gets screwed over, and has no other recourse. Like I said, that's just what I would do. Other people may be willing to bend over and take that beating meekly, but I for one would at least complain about it.

Publicly deriding extremely sub-par work does have an effect, after all. Anyone pulled a Ryan Waterhouse sketch out of any new products? I think not.

This card qualifies as poor customer service from both the artist for sending it in, and for Topps for allowing it to go out in a pack. And they need to be made aware of that.

Even tho I'm pretty new to the sketch scene,I am in disbelief that sketch made a pack. That was until I read it was by Topps. Nothing they do surprises me. They have been screwing me (and everyone else from what I gather) in the redemption card department. But I will certainly add this "Artist" to my don't buy from list. And did I read that right? He offered to SELL you another sketch....wow!!!

I couldn't. Even my stick figures look like refugees from Three Mile Island.

This is just obviously an unfinished card. If he wasn't going to at least ink it, he would have used a darker pencil on it.

Oh well.
