Default 2016 UD Marvel Gems

Saw this posted on another site, anyone have info on the set? I think pricing will determine if it has a shot of being successful. Low print run, quality cards...but if this is a $$$$ release it may flop.

Thoughts? Anyone have details?

My guess is it will be a $200ish/box release ala Marvel Premier and Retro.

If the base set has original art***, it could pop. However, both characters I character collect (FFF and RR) will be excluded, so I am sitting this one out beyond a printing plate or 2 (or 3, 4, 5, etc)

***EDIT: Original Ariel Olivetti Base Artwork ... so that will be NICE!

Well... A high end set featuring only women has success written all over it. To me, the artwork will make or break the set. Something like this calls for new artwork, in my opinion. But I guess that didn't stop people from buying Retro...

Ariel Olivetti is the artist for the base set, and he is fantastic!

Ariel Olivetti - Comic Artist - Gallery of the Most Popular Comic Art

So it will be money for sure.

Is that confirmed? I mean, I read, "These one-card packs include options such as Original Ariel Olivetti Base Artwork" but...

Well, that just isn't confirmation for me. If they are giving away 60 piece of base artwork, that is awesome! But I really thought it was more likely he did a subset or something. Why wouldn't the description call it out? Why not...

I know I'm in the minority here, but "all new artwork" is a lot more exciting to me than "numbered to 225". Expensive and collectible are not synonyms.

lol... you are right... I missed the "such as"... but hopefully there are other published Marvel Comics artists of his caliber as well, or then this set could be a dog.

If this set does release this year then it may flop. It's too soon after Marvel Masterpieces which broke most of us and now we are creeping into the Holiday Season. I don't think anyone is ready for another Limited Marvel Set right now But, I am eager to see if Jessica Jones is included. She hasn't gotten any love with Marvel Sets especially after her hit Netflix show.

Price will determine if I purchase. If I wanted to spend a lot on box I would buy a Jusko box. Anything over $50 I'll just wait it out and pick up singles I like on the cheap. I've recovered from MM and an insane flood and am ready for something new and reasonably priced to collect. Hopefully this set is priced well. The inserts sound interesting.

I actually like the epacks aspect. It really broadened the market for the MMJusko release. It probably will be enough to make this set successful just riding on the coattails of MMJusko, but it looks like there is also enough here to make this set stand out in its own right.

I will probably try a few epacks but won't pre-order. On a side note, the 4th quarter of this year is absolutely loaded with new non sport releases. So many choices!

I really don't shop for myself in November and December, except for some money I set aside for Black Friday deals. Unless this comes as a gift, I'm not likely to buy.

Oh man, and I thought I was just back with a solo run for MM '16

Some of the components of this set sound awesome, I just hope Olivetti is the biggest name they drop, or I may just give in.. and yeah Olivetti does great stuff, quite a few high-end (collectible) statues are based off his work

Some good ones that come to mind..

Apocalypse

Cable

and Deadpool for that matter

When it says the set is "driven by inserts" that gives me reason for pause. Marvel Masterpieces was driven by amazing artwork of base cards, no gimmicks inserts required.
If Olivetti is doing original artwork for the base set then this could seriously tempt me can only wait and see

The way I read it, all the base card art is by him, and the "options such as..." refers to what is available in the Exquisite pack. Once UD releases some more information about the set, I guess we'll know for sure.

Yeah...to me it says the base set is by him and in the Exquisite pack you can get the original art he did for the base set. Not sure why that's not clear to everyone else.

Well, it's clear to me Olivetti did at least some of the base cards. What we don't have confirmation of is if he did the entire base set. It could be like the Cryptozoic DC sets, where 10-15 artists each do 3-5 of the base cards. It will also be interesting to see if the original art is fully colored, or if it is like NAR's work in Masterworks, where it's black and white, and then digitally colored for the printed cards.

In any case, it will be interesting to see what the set is like. But until we have a lot more information, I won't be buying any.

Saw some sketches on Gem blanks being worked on at a convention I went to a couple months ago. I really dig the design of the blank itself and may try to snag an AP or 2 if possible
