Default Revisiting the Ginter Rat Bone

This card received a bit of outrage/ridicule when the redemptions were first fulfilled at the beginning of 2016 (Ginter amateur osteologist redemption). Primarily due to the fact the redemption cards themselves were trading at a relatively high premium prior to them actually being fulfilled by Topps. The initial premiums paid were likely due to wishful thinking by people hoping for something awesome like a dinosaur bone, or at the very least, something cooler than the animal ultimately chosen by Topps... a rat. This wishful thinking of people paying premiums for the redemption cards was probably also inadvertently aided by Topps as the company took a looooong time in fulfilling the redemption (i.e. collectors thought if Topps is holding off on releasing it, it must be really cool).

The card inevitably tanked, BUT I always thought it was kind of cool given its status of being the Troll 2 (Troll 2 (1990) - IMDb) of trading card redemptions.

At any rate, for some reason I was reminded of this card about a week ago, and I thought I might as well search eBay to see if I could get a cool one at a price that didn't break the wallet.

I ended up settling on the one below because I like the size of the specimen (shoulder blade?) vs the others available on eBay (slim pickings at this point):

I received it the other day and I absolutely love it! I initially thought it would be pretty close to regular card size (and similar to a MP14 shadowbox card), but it is actually about 5.5 inches tall and comes in a much sturdier encapsulation case.

Does anyone else love these cards?

Post your pics below if you have a rat bone card. Maybe we could reassemble the skeleton!

Did the rat skull ever make its way to the hands of a collector?

Topps management: Bob, go outside and club a rat over the head?
Bob: Why?
TM: We need it for 'relic' card redemptions.

That was the ultimate slap in the face to collectors. So glad I didn't buy into those redemptions.

True though. Could spin it into a skill or experience in the resume.

I spent a bundle on the 2012 mystery relic redemption after how much it had been hyped up and ended up with this POS

I took about a $450 bath on that one.

Never again.

What type of artifact would of made it worth the risk? What were people hoping for?

I dont think id ever pay a bunch for a mystery redemption. unless...only maybe...it was from CZE. their redemptions are actually good.

Was there something that made people believe it would be a dinosaur or something? I dont think id ever expect something that cool. mystery usually seems to mean garbage.

sorry no one likes your card still, Op.

On the flip side though, I did pull and redeem an arachnophobia card and love it. Thing is damn near a foot long! So yes, they can do it right when they want.

HAH! I guess it's really unexpected for a relic to end up being a rat, not even ancient.

Δ I think I read some of these can't be shipped over state lines because of biological laws.

That spider is awesome! Interesting wrinkle if the laws of some states don't allow specimens like this to be shipped. That's not something I would have considered.

^^^not true. You can't ship live tarantulas out of the U.S. Or have them shipped to you from outside of the U.S. Technically, they aren't even legal to ship through any postal service in America, but Fedex looks the other way and does it. A bunch are endangered and are taken from their habitats and sent into the pet trade. There's no biological reason they can't be shipped, the rules are strictly to protect endangered species.. A dead tarantula in a card would have no rules or regulations though.
