Default MTG help.....please.

Years ago I was into this around 3rd edition and black. A couple years ago I broke them out and started playing with my kids. I ended up selling them to some guy in Germany for 800-900. I couldn't belive they were worth that much.
Now my kids have been playing with their friends. If I were to buy a couple of boxes now, where should I start? They have way too many expansion sets. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

My friends just started playing and for his first box he asked for Eventide (Birthday gift). So that might be a start.

I haven't played since about 6th edition, and was thinking about getting back into it. I would be interested to know what to go after again also.

Guys I'm of little help here, but check out this forum (it sucks very low activity)...but shoot a PM to the one of the admin guys there. This is one of my local stores, they hold weekly tourneys and should be of some good info.

i've been out of this for a few years but if you want to play tourney, you'll need to probably buy a few starter decks and a box or two of the latest expansion. i think type II was the popular one since most people usually want to play with the more contemporary cards. have fun!

Eh...doubt you'll get too much from Pokemon anymore unless you can find someone that still plays, but yeah...magic is still worth good money XD

I wish I still had my black lotus from unlimited. I sold it years ago for $560. Is it still worth anything like that or has it dropped.

I never played any of these games but if you pull one of the rare cards that are worth money are they also worth more in gameplay? If I play your black lotus will I take down everyone else?

No, if I recall, tapping the Black Lotus would add a mana of any color to your manapool (needed to play cards). I could be wrong as I haven't played in 6 years. It might have added 3 to it instead of one.

Isn't it a banned card from Type II game play? I sold my stuff off years ago and haven't kept up on it since then, so I don't know what rules are in affect now.

Lots of the high value cards get banned because they are too powerful. Only time they can really be used is when the game type / tournament allows for all cards from all sets to be played.

You guys are total nerds............I've always been intersted in buying boxes of MTG because of the Rare cards for resale but never pulled the trigger. I can't see myself playing the game or tournaments. Its almost as bad as D & D.

Its not so bad when your 10-16ish. For me it was something to pass the time. Got out of it when I was 17 or so and sold everything when I was 21.

It wasn't a bad game back then, but the rules have gotten pretty ridiculous over the last few years. I never could get into D&D...guess I just wasn't that imaginative as a kid.

I play occasionally, but there are plenty of people locally that play a lot. They are completely into it. I still buy packs once in a while and try to pull good cards to sell sometimes, but do play casually.
