Default 1996 marvel masterpieces

I stumbled upon them on Ebay. What's the story behind them that they are so valuable?

I wasn't into Marvel cards back then but I seem to recall that after a couple of successful releases Fleer/Skybox decided to try a premium set and raised the price significantly. What happened was virtually nobody ordered any and it was made to order so of course everybody wanted it when they found out how little was made and boxes skyrocketed.

These were made to order because no one wanted them at the time for the price. Now with 20/20 hindsight everyone wants them.

I just started back into non-sports about a year or two ago and these are on my want list. I have been tracking them on ebay and if you can afford it with the economy now is the time to buy. They are going for less than they have in a while now.

1995 is not as rare but tough to get as well. If you are looking at some of the older Masterpieces cards you may want to go to 95 first and work your way up to 96.

If anyone wants I would be interested in splitting up a box if the price is decent and splitting up the cards. I don't know how collation was but you may get 2 base sets if collation is good.
