Topps Announces Len Brown Autographs in Mars Attacks!

April 16 – As a surprise addition to this summer’s highly anticipated Mars Attacks Heritage card series, Topps announces that co-creator Len Brown will be signing a limited number of foil-stamped parallel cards.

“During the course of his remarkable, 40+ years at Topps, Len Brown helped shape hundreds of Topps products,Len Brown from Ugly Stickers to Garbage Pail Kids and Wacky Packages,” said Ira Friedman, Topps VP of Global Licensing. ”He spearheaded many legendary sets, collaborating with artists the likes of Basil Wolverton, Jack Davis, Norm Saunders and Art Spiegelman, among many others– and in his spare time created the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents comic book with Wally Wood for Tower Comics. We’re thrilled that Len has agreed to add his signature to our 50th Anniversary card set so that fans can have the chance to own an authentic piece of Mars Attacks history.”

For Mars Attacks Heritage, Brown will be signing 10 foil-stamped parallel of each of the 55 cards from the reissued base set, for a total of 550 autographs, randomly inserted into packs. Each of these parallel cards will also be hand numbered 1 through 10.

“Never would I have imagined that Mars Attacks would be so popular and its fans so passionate fifty years later,” said Brown, the sole surviving creator of Mars Attacks. “I’m delighted to be lending my pen to these cards, and hope fans will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed working on the original series all those years ago.”

In commemoration of the brand’s half-century milestone, Topps is reissuing all 55 original Mars Attacks cards, plus adding 25 all-new ones. Ten of the new cards feature paintings by Jason Edmiston, inspired by unused Wally Wood sketches from 1962. The other 15 new cards showcase never-before-seen “New Universe” art by comic artist John McCrea. All base cards will be produced on vintage style “Heritage” card stock. In addition, first-ever Mars Attacks sketch cards will be randomly packed at the rate of one per hobby display box.



Mars Attacks Heritage is currently being offered in this month’s issue of Previews catalog (April cover date), and via Topps authorized hobby distributors and will be in stores this July.

No, he's got pants on. You can kind of make it out a bit under the MARS ATTACKS bar next to my name. It's my version of one of the cards from the original set - it pictures a bunch of shirtless martians boozing it up watching the destruction of Earth on a monitor.

Just be aware, like any other product, there will be a lot of "simple" sketches, I'm sure. Not that it's bad (I like a lot of those), but they won't all be full color and such.

I personally have a strong connection with the subject having known and loved the original my whole life, I put a TON of effort into my cards and painted every one. I want my sketch cards to feel like they could go right along with the original set. Even the silly ones like the Scream one.

Oh I have no idea who's on board other than what been posted on the Mars Attacks Facebook page. I don't have any kind of "insider" info or something. I was just explaining to folks who are new to the sketch card game that most sets have cards that aren't super full color and all that. Doesn't mean they're not any good - like I said, I'm a fan of a lot of the minimal style sketches (when you can tell there is still talent and effort involved). But I know a lot of people buy products based on the preview sketches which are normally the cream of the crop, then when they buy boxes and don't pull one of those they feel cheated.

Happens with EVERY set now.
