I've been playing around with the idea of getting a series of commissions done that when complete would be like my own sketch card product (just for my own collection, not for selling). I'm thinking of getting one sketch in the theme done per artist rather than have one artist do several of them.
Has anyone had success with trying something like this? If so, how did it go? I know this would be crazy expensive, so this would definitely be a multi-year kind of project.

Not sure exactly what you're meaning... Have the artists do their rendition of 'hamsters' for example and end up with a bunch of hamster sketches from various artists?? lol.
I am working on having specific artists complete a favorite comic cover of mine. The first will be here later this week. I want to eventually get Hall, Tan, Laurange, and a couple more. Kind of like what you're thinking, just a different style/medium on each.

I basically have two examples in mind. One would be a sketch of every Ghost Rider cover. Another would be inspired by my favorite album covers.
Your idea sounds very cool, though. I'd love to see how that turns out!

This is a very exciting way to collect, and I have always liked the single theme interpreted by multiple artists.
Here is an amazing example, from the collection of 501blues: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks guys--that's very cool to see a series like that.
I'm going to have to think this one over to figure out which direction I want to go--and save up some money

If I were you I'd go have my own cards made up and send em to any artist that agrees to do the artwork. This way you have uniformity. Plus you can go to cons and get cards done on the spot by artists. If this is a way forward contact Karen at Iconix.biz. she'll set ya right.

I just had an idea, feel free to ignore it if it doesn't tickle your fancy...
How about Ghost Rider in the pose of other famous covers? Todd McFarlane just did this and it is pretty awesome:

That's a great idea, Rian. I'll have to add that to the "think it over" list

Well, it might not be "famous" covers, but it's my favorite cover. I just think it's so cool, and a great tribute to the artist(s) that did the original.

Well, I can't get that crazy on the characters either. Just way too much $$. I am sticking to my favorites. The first one is Phoenix. Will probably have an Emma Frost done up next. Kind of depends on the artist, though. If I think their style would be more stunning with either character, that's the one I'm going with.

Although I didn't think of it as a "set" so much, just my own stock to commission artists to do sketches on at conventions. My plan would be to do one card and one page from my sketch book at each convention.
