Superman™: The Legend Surprises

By Miranda Anderson
05 Mar 2013

We recently started posting Superman™: The Legend sketch card previews to our Facebook page, and if you are not already a fan of Cryptozoic there, you should “Like” us right now to stay up-to-date on all sorts of trading card related news! Twice a week we will feature cards from a new selection of artists, previewing every artist who participated in the set. We did the same thing for the Batman™: The Legend sketch cards, and I think it is really important to show collectors the overall quality turned in from every artist. The Superman universe of characters was a lot of fun for us to work with, and I think the artists really enjoyed working on the set as well, which you can see by looking at how much effort they put into their cards!

In addition to having some great sketch cards, I'm really excited for the all-new base card art. We are very lucky to have Mahmud Asrar working with us. The artist on the Supergirl comics, Asrar created a beautiful card for Supergirl as well as some of the other characters. I think the fact that we offer that very authentic take on the original art and writing is something that is a great value-add to the set. We work with some very talented artists, and I just love when they go a little further to include a beautiful background or some subtle detail. One of my favorite moments during approvals was when I found a little Batman Beyond in the sky behind the main character in the foreground. And, when the artists have fun with it and include lots of great detail, we get really into the process for determining opaque whites for the parallel set, coming up with ways to use the art for promotions, or thinking of new ways to feature artists in an upcoming set!

I'm most looking forward to the X-Ray Vision chase set. For this set we are using thermochromatic ink, so when you rub the top layer you will get to see through to the art underneath. The art was fun to select, as it takes a look at some of the vintage Superman badges and then some of the modern takes on similar poses and themes. A sort of look at “then” and “now,” it was fun to dig up some of these really awesome little sayings and then contrast them with the new artistic takes on Superman.

George Nadeau, our art acquisitions manager, is very excited for the oversized art cards. We partner with many talented artists with distinct visions and styles that are expressed in all of their work. So what happens when those artists collaborate? That was the question George posed when he commissioned the oversized art cards. He paired up artists and asked them to collaborate in any way that they desired. The results? Fantastic! We believe collectors will enjoy examining each of these jam cards to appreciate the unique contributions of the artists who produced them.

Batman, version 2. Open if you like it, not to make money.

You probably won't make money opening this product, but I think if you like to open sketch based products, you will probably be happier opening this or Batman than a lot of other products.

I initially wasn't interested in it based on the first artist list that was posted on Cryptozoic's website, but they have been adding to the list over the past couple of weeks, and it's starting to look good. I am looking forward to seeing some of the previews on their facebook page.

Also I'm interested to find out how many artists participated in the oversized jam sketch cards. It's a cool idea, and if any artists on BO have any insights they could share, I would appreciate it!

Looks like a cool set. I like the oversized jam concept, especially that Engstrom/Simko one!

Also glad to see Robert Hack on the artist roster.

That cartoony style is just a turn off for me. never liked that sort of stuff especially when it's almost all the artists doing it. But that's just me.

I had to pass on Superman so someone else is gonna have to post up the approved characters list and whatnot this time.

It's probably a good thing for y'all, anyhow... Superboy was my first comic love and I'm not sure anyone would've cared to see my take on every one of his costumes on half my cards Pains me to miss the opportunity, though!

These comic sets just seems too risky for a single sketch card. I see some nice cards I'd like to have, but I also see some pulls that would make me feel like a chump for spending the $50 or whatever. But for the price of a box or two you could buy a very nice card of your choice and still have money left over. I guess it's a safe buy if you're going after base an inserts as well, but as someone only interested in the sketches I'll stick to the secondary market.

I saw on the Cryptozoic website that they have added the release date for this set, it's next Wednesday, 4/24. Looking forward to it, I will be opening a case.

I wasn't familiar with him until this set, but those sketches by Eman Casallos are probably the best sketches I've seen lately. Amazing!
