I'm glad neither of my favorite characters are Spidy or Wolverine lol

I picked up two reds yesterday. First Marvel pick ups in a long time. I grew up an X-Men nerd so I'm going to pick up some of the X-Men characters.

$2000. Yup. This is no doubt the hottest non-sports cards since I don't know when. I've personally never seen anything like it. Looking at the sales, it's just insane. Congrats to you all!!!

So, I broke down and ordered a couple boxes. Even if I don't hit the lottery with a green Spidey or Wolverine, I figure I will be able to make most of my money back.

I love the Glebes's work, but that's crazy to pay that much

Of course, I thought $1,500 for a B&W NAR sketch was a little nuts as well, but I realize he hasn't had any official sketch cards out for awhile.

EDIT: I heard someone say the NAR Iron Fist sold for $1,500, but looks like an offline deal was made. I wonder what it went for...

EDIT 2: Another $500 Glebe sketch from Retro: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-Marvel-...-/231045275217

I want to know who is paying the ridiculous prices for these - comic or card collectors? I can't see comic collectors dropping $2k on a Spidey card when they could probably find an Amazing Fantasy 15 for that price.

I think it's either super hero specific collectors or card collectors. You are right that comic buyers would rather spend it on the actual comic.

Yeah, I've been wondering that myself. I'm happy for Tim and others that these are selling so incredibly well, but as to why I'm totally baffled. I thought this could do well, but never thought there would be so many cards going for close to or more than the MSRP price of a case (that's my personal measure of when the individual card prices are kind of crazy).

I think it's just kind of a perfect storm with this release. Seems to have ended up being produced in lesser quantity than anticipated. The green/blue/red metal inserts appeal to sports card collectors that already have the expectation of rarity and value built in. Finally, set collectors. After experiencing what happened with Marvel Premiere, I think there are quite a few people out there who know they need to act NOW and get cards for sets because they'll dry up and stop showing up for sale soon.

I mean, I don't recall exactly, but I do remember that there were anywhere from 800 to 1000 auctions for Marvel Premiere base, sketches, inserts, etc. around the time that product released. Look at it now. I just got 245 auctions for "Marvel Premier" on a search in trading cards. It's down to like 25% of what it used to be... and most of these are just what's been recycled 50 times on BIN's running 30 days since then. I think about 2 cases worth of new MP cards have kind of mixed their way in there, too, in the last couple weeks. One break posted here and another obvious by the listing titles.

I am not a comics guy--can someone explain to me what this sketch is about? Because it looks to me like a Fantastic Four member with a paper bag over the head.

2013 Marvel Fleer Retro Mr Fantastic Sketch Card Artist Joe Hogan 1 1 | eBay

EDIT: Just answered my own question. It's Amazing Bag-Man: http://marvel.wikia.com/Spider-Man's_Suits#Bag-Man

Quote:
Twice has Spider-Man been forced to abandon his usual costume. When he lost the symbiote costume, Spider-Man was forced to use an old Fantastic Four costume, with a paper bag mask and a "Kick me" sign on his back. He was then sent into action as "The Amazing Bag-Man". Another time without his suit, he was forced to go into action as "The Bombastic Bag-Man". He has never been seen as either incarnation since.

EDIT: Just answered my own question. It's Amazing Bag Man: Spider-Man's Suits - Marvel Comics Database
HA! That's Spider-Man. One time his costume was ripped to shreds and Johnny Storm (human torch) lent him an extra costume to wear on his way home, but without a mask he had to use the bag.

I don't know if it's been seen anywhere else other than that one issue and a bunch of memorable variant covers.

EDIT: Way to wiki! I guess he used it twice, then!

I think the gem set attracted some of the sports collectors. I haven't bought marvel cards in years but I recently picked up some gem cards and now Im picking up some sketch cards as well. I got burned out on baseball.

There have been quite a few $1000-$2000 sketch cards in the last 5 years. Probably a few more Star Wars than Marvel but $2k is not a record for recent non-sport insert. However, yes, in the aggregate these Retro cards have done insane sales though they are $200+ a box.

And any Harrison Ford autos. Didn't the first one go for $10k?

I think so a couple of years ago, I think it was his first and they only made like 5. I sold one from galactic files last year for 3500 though

Sales are still extremely strong across the board on everything. Even seeing the common autos starting to tick up. Seems like people really love the impel insert sets as well. The base 1992 Wolverine Impel had an action end at $12, and other names routinely bring good money. All the 1:40 insert sets and bringing good money as well.

There are still some sellers out there making mistakes as I snagged a few deadpool impel autos cheap.

Keep an eye on the PMGs as well, every now and then you can catch one cheap and are able to flip it.
