I only draw funny hack cards. The more hackish, the better, I say!!!

I wouldn't take it that way, dd316.

Speaking for myself, for someone used to putting tons and tons of realism and/or tiny detail into their work, a more "cartoonish" or graphic style just tends to go much faster, even though it usually doesn't meet your own personal standard for the work you WANTED to do.

Jim Lee could do pages much faster if he drew in a graphic style like Mike Mignola. Though, it probably wouldn't be as GOOD, because he wouldn't be used to working through that lens.

I took the "funny cards" comment to mean the 6 or 7 brush stroke, black and white cards we see on eBay for 5 bucks, that people barely concentrated on for a minute or two to crank out cards.

That's why I asked.

In all honesty, the cartoonish cards (the way I did them) take longer than fully painted ones. There's more precision involved so I tend to work slower making sure I'm getting the lines right. A mistake on a highly detailed piece is easier to cover up than stuff where the warts are right in your face.

And that's why your cards will stand out and be prized from this release - they're fantastic!

No,no, I get that! lol

I was saying I don't consider your work "funny" in the way I perceived Roy's comment to mean. I could be wrong, I mean it was his comment.

You obviously put time and effort into your art. "Cartoon" is one of those words that covers such a wide range of art style that it ends up being very vague.

Here's an example of a style I might adopt to save time, that would be "hack" in my opinion.

what? Have no idea what your talking about. When i started the MA set people suggested I do campy cards or comedic cards. I simply stated I don't do comedy or camp. Unclench bro.

The way it was worded just read that way. Carry on.

Naw to me comedic is like what Katie Cook does, cutey comic stuff. What you did was more along the line of parody and satire to even political cartooning.

Roy, happy to discuss Topps policies (including our failures to live up to our own) I just don't think it's appropriate for ME to do so publicly and I didn't want to derail this conversation (as it apparently has now) with an attack/defense of the company, which I have to be delicate about in an open forum anyway. If you email me I'll happily chat.

Believe me, I am aware of Topps' issues, but like I said, it would be unprofessional of me to discuss publicly as I am not an official Topps spokesperson, just a guy who works there who likes interacting with fans (and believe me, as a former freelancer I am as big of an advocate of talent as you will find).

Oh don't worry Alvin, I've moved on completely, what is is. Just wanted to clarify my opinions. And believe me this thread hasn't bee derailed yet. The set comes out soon or as I noticed the dates been pushed back, so plenty of more posts about the art and other stuff will be made.

Going to be taking an extended absence from this board, probably for a little under two weeks as I work on various time consuming projects, one of which is the below Kickstarter with Mantic Games... (notice the EXCLUSIVE trading cards they're offering for a nominal pledge of just $15!)

Too late! Plus I have to be careful using copyrighted characters, but I usually find ways around that.

I am not looking looking forward to seeing the same dealers kill this set!
what they did to the value of Mars Attacks 2012 is unconscionable!
Anyone hoping to score any profit 2012 sketch cards is gone. Really curious to see the pricing on the new 2013 sketch cards. I see a severe watering down of the value...

Since I'm not a dealer... Let the killing begin I'd be happy to pick up some of these sketches on the cheap
