Hmm... Good point! Any chance these are return cards being sold on behalf of the artist?

Not legitimately - I contacted the seller when the 1st one was posted and he said that it was pack pulled. Funny how 2 of the sketches weren't previewed either.

His sketch cards were limited to about 25 total between in pack and returns and they were all fully painted-- and easily the highest quality of anything in the set. His original art sells for thousands of dollars and it was a real coup that he did any sketches at all. He's only ever done sketch cards once (for "Crimson") and this is what he did:

As you can see, he did much higher quality work this time around. If he'd done B&W line drawings i'm sure it'd be something more in your price range. Would I have paid 1500 for his painted sketch cards? No. But I understand why somebody would.

Look around and you'll find a wide array of quality and pricing. Lots of of good affordable cards. But the better it is and the more popular the artist, the more it's going to run you.
I'm definitely a n00b when it comes to the sketch card work, and didn't realize his status in the community. I also didn't realize that he's a paisan.

And for the record, my intent wasn't to knock the MA release. I do like it and am glad that many good sketches are affordable... regardless of the initial starting bid that many start at.

One would have a better chance of getting struck by lightning on the way to cash in a winning lottery ticket than to pull 3 cards...

Between that and the silly asking prices on some new puzzle sets, some of these sellers think they struck gold.

As a collector, the mediocre pulls from my boxes where I can't even break even on my boxes, prevent me from continuing to try my luck on more boxes. And frankly if I was lucky enough to pull a very high valued sketch, I think I'd have to sell it to recoup some what I spent on my collection.
I guess it depends on what you want. I can't afford to spend nearly that much on sketch cards, but I still love collecting them. There are always going to be artists that are in such high demand that their cards sell for hundreds or even $1000+. I'll never have a Horley or a NAR!, and I'm okay with that. You can get many very high quality sketch cards for under $100. Now is a great time to be a collector, in that the standard requirements for most companies have gotten so high that you can get very high quality pack pulled sketch cards for $30-$50. If you are only collecting Mars Attacks it might be a little difficult, because the market isn't as flooded as licenses like Marvel, DC, and Star Wars.

Not sure who you're referring to but it might be Alex's agent selling his returns.

When I spoke to him, Alex seemed totally confused by sketch cards and how to sell returns. It's possible his agent thinks fans only want them if they're pack-pulled. He kept asking me that, in fact and I kept saying "actually fans LIKE returns!" lol.

Or this isn't the same person, I don't know.

That wound make sense I guess. Kind of a bummer though since he told several of us that he was holding his APs for an upcoming convention. Ah well.

Actually... A lot of people exclusively collect pack pulled cards. On the secondary market, I'd say a pack pulled card is worth more assuming the same level of quality. Anyway... not trying to be argumentative. Since Topps doesn't designate the APs/ARs in any way, it would be easy enough for a seller to pass them off as pack pulled cards if they thought they could make more that way.

I'd pay more for an AP any day - since A) the money goes directly to the artist who I don't mind supporting and B) they are generally of higher quality.

There were 2 qualifiers in that statement A) secondary market = likely not being sold by the artist B) assuming the same level of quality
