Arrow Thor: The Dark World Trading Card Set

From Cardboard Connection:

2013 Upper Deck Thor: The Dark World Trading Cards

2013 Upper Deck Thor: The Dark World tackles the blockbuster sequel with a broad mix of base cards, inserts and hits. Put together, they make for a comprehensive set that covers both the film and the comic that laid its foundation.

2013 Upper Deck Thor: The Dark World has a 60-card base set that covers the film, or at least what's made available in time to be included with the set. Today, movie studios are busy working on special effects until the last possible moment. This can make it tough for a trading card set that has to be prepped in advance. Still, the base set should give a solid overview of the film's characters and central plot. Just look at it as a compliment to seeing the film. A base set parallel is done with acrylic stock. The release also has Printing Plates.

Behind-the-scenes and promotional artwork is covered with cards dedicated to Thor: The Dark World movie posters and concept art.

Book of Yggdrasil cards require a special decoder (also inserted in packs) to translate parts of legends.

2013 Upper Deck Thor: The Dark World hobby boxes come with either a sketch card or an autograph. Autographs fall under a couple of umbrellas. Comic Book Creator Autographs are all signed on-card. Actor Autographs include several of the film's stars. Signers include Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Zachary Levi (Fandral), Jamie Alexander (Sif), Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis) and Ray Stevenson (Volstagg). While Hemsworth is likely to draw a lot of attention as the lead actor in the film, Levi has a large fan following also thanks, in large part, to the lead role on Chuck. This is also his first certified autograph in a licensed trading card set.

Estimated Release Date: 11/13
Product Configuration: 24 packs per box, 5 cards per pack
Price Point: Low- to Mid-End Entertainment Card
Target Audience: Thor Fans, Marvel Collectors, Set Builders, Autograph Collectors, Sketch Card Collectors, Movie Memorabilia Collectors

After the disappointment that was Iron Man 3, I'm quite weary of this next release. Anyway, I know some artists are currently working on sketch cards for the set, but otherwise I haven't seen any information.
I sent my cards back today. The deadline is quickly approaching.

I didn't do very many for this set either. Trying to reduce the actual number of cards I do.

I think the Beta Ray Bill I did turned out pretty awesome, and I don't often say things like that.

The only way I'd buy any amount of it is if they had autographs of Portman. Otherwise, I'll probably just pick up a base set.

I'll be ordering a few boxes. Will wait and see if the price tumbles like the IM3 cards though

I haven't seen much about the set, but DACW does indicate the following autographs:

Confirmed Autograph Signers:

- Zachary Levi
- Chris Hemsworth
- Jaimie Alexander
- Kat Dennings
- Ray Stevenson

That's a pretty good list so far! However, what concerns me is that there is nothing said about costume cards. If you're only getting 1 hit per box (an autograph, sketch, or comic book creator autograph), then I think $80/box is too much. If you get 2 costume cards per box like in AA or IM3, then it looks decent.

I added the write-up from cardboard connection to the first post. Will update as we get more info. I emboldened a line I found funny. I guess this is the reaction to everybody complaining the IM3 set only covered half the film? Signers are better than IM3 at least. I'll be interested to find out the complete box breakdown. At $90/box, I expect at least 3 hits. I'm assuming it will be the same as previous releases and the 2nd and 3rd hits will be memorabilia cards.

Hmm. I wouldn't mind a Chris Hemsworth auto.

I don't think that's a sketch.

And I wouldn't get my hopes up for Portman signing for any set. She just doesn't do autographs.

Which is better? A set that is released to coincide with the release of the actual movie? Or a set that is released MONTHS after the movie when everyone's moved on to the next big movie?

It would be nice if they included the entire movie in the base set, may they could do an update set for the true collector or something. Maybe a direct edition set of a few base cards to run the set through the entire movie or something.

Did you only get like 1-2 autos per case from the first Thor product from UD?

Couldn't tell myself. Thought it could be a Glebe. You're right, probably way too early. Still looks kick ass!

1. Although there was a chance to get 2 (I think I broke 4 cases worth and one case had 2 autos)

My preference... Catalog the entire film in the base and release it 2 weeks after the movie hits. If the movie is worth a card set, a two week delay shouldn't be an issue. Otherwise, the base set is silly. Just my opinion.

Plus, its a November release not a big summer blockbuster.

I'm based in Asia and the movie is out on 31st October here. By the time my boxes get here the movie will have been playing for about a month already

That's a great looking set of autograph cards. I can only hope the captain America: winter soldier set is half as good as this one.

Best set of the year IMO. And one of the strongest sales wise. Wonder where case prices will be in six mos.

I haven't really seen prices moving much since release.

Me either. And that's with UD's restrictions and really not that many sellers compared to other NonSport sets.

The autos are definitely fantastic with this set. But with 2-3 per case and ~$88 a box, I doubt box prices will go up that much especially when UD supply restrictions are lifted and IF the flood of Autos lowers the market price for those cards (though usually Movie Autos don't move much).

The autograph list is so good, case prices aren't going to drop much once it's been out 90 days and all the internet sellers like BO start selling it online. If it does drop in price, I think there are people who will buy as much as they can.

Once it dries up, it will start going up in price. Right now, I think a lot of people are tapped out with all the products that came out in the past month or two, all the Black Friday sales, and Christmas. I think this spring sealed cases will start to move up, especially once people start getting their tax refunds.

Can somebody just explain to me again why you can't go buy this from blowout or dacard world etc? What is this 90 day rule?, and why does it exist?

All that appears to be happening now is very few breaks for what looks like a solid well done product. A strange combination!

You can buy it from D&A, but not from BO. UD has 'authorized internet retailers' and only they are allowed to sell product online for the first 90 days. BO isn't one - East coast is only D&A and Pittsburgh, I think. Other retailers can still sell it, they just can't advertise/sell through their website/online.
