Default First Look: 2015 Star Wars Illustrated Empire

First Look: 2015 Star Wars Illustrated Empire

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor
Star Wars collectors will be drawn to this one.
Topps revealed its plans for its first Force-fueled release of 2015 on Wednesday, and it will be 2015 Star Wars Illustrated Empire Strikes Back, an art-driven product that’s focused on The Empire Strikes Back and is slated to arrive on April 8.
Each 24-pack box will include a selection from the 100-card base set with two hits per box — a mix of cards from three sketch-based sets, film Relics, printing plates and artist autographs. Each six-card pack will carry a suggested retail price of $3.99.

Each base card will have three types of parallels — Purple, Bronze and Gold — while there will be four types of inserts. They are One Year Earlier (story precursors), Movie Poster Artist Reinterpretations, The Mission: Capture Skywalker and Embossed Carbonite character cards. The One Year cards will be found in every other pack, while the Poster cards will be eight per box the Carbonite cards will be two per box and the Mission cards will be eight per box.
Among the hits will be Panorama sketch cards — aka sketch booklets — as well as Film Cell Relics with a piece from a print, printing plates, Sketchagraphs signed by the actors shown and artist autos that parallel the base set. According to the company, there will be approximately 5,700 total Panorama sketches, 2,000 regular sketches, 3,000 Relics, 800 Sketchagraphs and 5,000 artist autos in the product.
The parallel cards will be found eight per box for Purple, two per box for Bronze and there will be just 10 copies of each Gold card made.

Non-stop Star Wars! Bring it on. With new movie coming at end of 2015 it should be a busy year.

I hope they rethink the design of the artist autographs. This example covers the most important part - the artwork! Also, do these really have to be stickers?

I can't begin to tell you how how I absolutely despise film relics being considered 'hits'.

If I do this set I will do maybe 15 cards. Last Illustrated set wasn't fun.

The last set was based on the radio drama, correct? This one sounds like it's just about the movie.

While I understand most of us don't like film cell relics as hits, if the numbers being reported here are correct, they won't make up a majority of the hits. Looks like there are around 8500 boxes, so the film cells will hit about 1 in 3 boxes.

Looks like 1 hit per box will be a sketch (panorama 2:3 boxes, regular 1:4 boxes, sketchagraph 1:10-11 boxes), and 1 hit per box will be something else (film cell 1:3 boxes, artist autograph 2:3 boxes, print plate 1:20 boxes).

Depending on who they get to sign for the sketchagraphs, this looks like a solid set to me. Not as good as ROTJ or Chrome or Masterpieces (hopefully), but not bad like Jedi Legacy, and it looks much better than the last Illustrated set.

The movie and Radio drama. I haven't heard anything about this except what's here. So I know no artwork specifics. My AP sales from Illustrated have been great but they killed it on the deadline and then shortening the deadline by 2 days near the end really killed it. But it being Empire, I still want to do it just not as many cards.

The sample Panoramic Sketch card of Han, Leia, and Chewie says "From the Original Radio Dramatization" at the bottom.

I'm very surprised Topps continued with this concept. I expect(hope) this will accompany a re-release of the Empire radio drama on MP3 CD. I suppose we can expect a Jedi Illustrated set as well.

This is the write up I got in the solicitation:

... "Star Wars Illustrated is the Topps Star Wars trading card platform that lets you SEE the Radio Dramas like never before! Breathtaking all-new artwork depicts The Empire Strikes Back from new vantage points and reveals new depth. Base cards feature all-new, original artwork from top-tier artists! 145 cards tell the story: 100 Base cards, 15 One Year Earlier insert, 10 Movie Poster Artist Reinterpretations, 8 Embossed Carbonite Character Inserts, and 12 The Mission: Capture Skywalker inserts. 6 different hits add value for collectors! Panorama Sketch Cards, Film Cell Relics, Sketchagraphs, Sketch Cards, Artist Autographs and Printing Plates. Each pack contains 5 Star Wars Illustrated Empire Base cards and 1 Insert card."

Will be passing on this one.

I've been wondering the same thing also. I've worked on every SW set the since the first 'Illustrated' and haven't gotten any info on this one.

Another Topps Star Wars set due in April other than Empire Illustrated? Different than any of the previously announced sets for 2015? Or have dates changed since this list was posted?

February 11th: Star Wars Masterwork

February 25th: Star Wars Rebels (Retail Only)

April 29th: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Illustrated

June 10th: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith 3-D Widevision (Online Exclusive 2000 Boxes)

August 5th: Star Wars Chrome Perspectives Part 2

Doesn't that seem like a ton of artwork for a set...?
