Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, Catherine's The country’s largest retailer of plus-size women’s apparel, Charming Shoppes, Inc. says its round of store closures and layoffs is “in response to the continuing weak retail and economic environment.” The corporate parent of Lane Bryant and Catherine’s stores will close 150 stores, lay off 150 employees (13% of its management staff), and trim the amount of stores it will open in fiscal 2009. Talbots, J. Jill The Talbots Inc. announced it has slowed its growth plans for this year and will close about 20 underperforming Talbots brand stores in light of the economic challenges to the company. The news comes on the heels of Talbots' previous announcement that it will shut 78 Talbots kids and men's stores. Linens n’ Things Bankrupt home furnishings retailer Linens 'n Things' disclosed that it plans to dispose of 120 locations this year. Linens Holding Corp. announced it had hired DJM Realty, LLC, a New York-based real estate consulting firm, to dispose of its under-performing stores located in 31 states. Also, the Clifton, N.J.-based chain telegraphed it was preparing to shutter as many as 80 more of its 589 stores in the near future. Goody's Family Clothing Knoxville-based Goody's Family Clothing Inc. will close 18 underperforming stores in June. "There are some stores that are closing as part of the continual evaluation process we have to determine profitability," Alm said. "It is an effort to make the chain healthier overall." Gap Inc. The company said the closures — all planned for fiscal 2008 — will be weighted toward the Gap brand. Foot Locker Specialist retailer Foot Locker is planning more store closures after reporting a 23% nosedive in profits during the fourth quarter. Foot Locker Inc. plans to close 30 to 40 more stores than originally planned. In March, the company said it plans to shutter 140 stores for fiscal 2008. During the first half of the year, the company closed 97 stores. Seventeen of those were part of a program initiated last year to accelerate the closing of unproductive stores. Wickes Wickes Furniture is going out of business and closing all of its stores, Wickes, a 37-year-old retailer that targets middle-income customers, filed for bankruptcy protection last month. Zales, Piercing Pagoda The owner of Zales and Piercing Pagoda previously said it plans to close 82 stores by July 31, announced that it is closing another 23 underperforming stores. The company said it's not pro viding a list of specific store closures. Of the 105 locations planned for closure, 50 are kiosks and 55 are stores. Disney Store The Walt Disney Company announced it acquired about 220 Disney Stores from subsidiaries of The Children's Place Retail Stores. The exact number of stores acquired will depend on negotiations with landlords. Those subsidiaries of Children's Place filed for bankruptcy protection in late March. Walt Disney in the news release said it has also obtained the right to close about 98 Disney Stores in the U.S. The press release didn't list those stores. Home Depot The Home Depot Inc. announced that it is shuttering 15 stores amid a slumping U.S. economy and housing market. It is also removing 50 stores from our new store pipeline. That defianately sucks if you work at one of those stores. But as I was reading the list I couldn't help but think that 80% of the stores listed were the kind of stores I walk by in the mall thinking, "what is the point of going into that store?". Alot of them are overpriced narrow market stores.
