Default Poor economy what should I buy?

With the economy the way it is, and must stuff selling at like 50% off what should I buy? I say 50% cause if you look at some of the Sterling stuff that was selling for 2K 2 months ago, I am seeing it sell for 1K. As well anybody who invested in the CT partial share marketplace and saw those cards sell at like 40% what we got them for now is the time to buy.

I am thinking of buying vintage PSA graded cards like Mantle, Williams, etc. I am sure if you buy something today and wait for 2 years you will probably see a 50-100% gain in your investment. Anybody else have any good ideas? I am hesitant on holding onto wax or young rookies cause you never know what will happen with them.

As well if anybody knows of a particular card I should buy or a particular set any comments would help. I am getting a little uneasy feeling about 2008 Sterling since I don't think people will be willing to spend $200 on 1 card anymore.

Suggestions so far:
1954 Topps Hank Aaron
1951 Bowman Willie Mays
1952 Topps Willie Mays
1948 Stan Musial
Muhammad Ali Auto
1948 leaf jackie robinson

Pay off your debts if you have them and save some money, these next few years are going to be bumpy. If you must burn your money, you could buy what is left of my collection. You got 90% of it last time around and I've pared down my PC some more.

Easily, I sold over 100K on Ebay last year. I have no debts and suddenly a whole lot of money to burn since I have not bought anything really for a long time and I have gotten rid of almost all of my inventory.

As well saving money now is a bad ideal since the saving rate is bad and the stock market well like everybody else ive lost 40% of my money there.

When everybody is selling and nobody is buying is the time to buy.

I agree the time to buy is now. There are deals to be had eveywhere (wax/singles/graded/vintage) I have stepped up my buying as well, we will have to check back in the upcoming years to see if it worked or not. But so far so good!!!! Thanks. Rob

As Suzy Orman would say based on your credit profile, You are approved. C'Mon spend a lot of money and help the economy.

I personally think high grade vintage (Professionally Graded or not) will be the way to go if those prices soften like everything else.

As far as new stuff goes my suggestion would be on card HOF Autographs (1997 Upper Deck Legends, Topps Archves, etc.) since the sticker has made these dinosaurs.

Thats why now is the time to invest. The stock market isn't going to go down much more than it already has. If it does to the point where we are in a depression, we're all screwed anyways.

You are exactly correct. This is where you can make or break your future/retirement. People need to have faith in our future econmoy right now and continue to spend, invest and contribute to savings/401k/retirements funds. Your shares you purchase now are at an all time low. When is the best time to buy? We all do it with cards, it's just like prospecting. Buy low, sell high. Like I already stated, I have bumped up my spending on cards with a hope for a large future return, just like I have with my other investments. Only time will tell who is right in this matter. Rob

Yes but with the stock market you would have to keep it in there for awile and then you have to pay a lot of fees to trade and then you get taxed when you take it out. Hopefully by the time I have all my money (Febuary end of the football season when I take my money out of my sportsbook) the economy will upswing and I will be able to buy 50 cases of 08 sterling.

I am thinking of maybe a Mantle card...but that is too much money to put into 1 card...I am more looking at $2-5K cards rather than a 10K card.

Believe it or not, I honestly think that anyone who buys modern Sportkings cards today will reap high rewards in the future. It is the "type" of product that everyone wants. On-card autos, very limited production run, only 1 parallel set, and very nice inserts with incredible 1/1 cut autos. And not only that, the majority of the people on these cards are the best of the best, and I honestly think their checklist is only going to get better.

Just my 2 cents worth. And if anyone's wondering...I have already put my money where my mouth is.

There has been a 2006 Chrome DP Longoria red refractor auto floating around on Ebay lately BIN/BO $5000. I know it would be a gamble since he is only a rookie when cards like Mantle are already established, but it looks enticing.

If you did want to invest in stocks but don't want to pay high trading fees, scottrade has $7 trades, plus you get like 7 free if you are referred by someone. I have an account there, but not much, just some gambling money.

I don't think Longoria is worth that.

Maybe BJ Upton and David Price looks like he will end up being an ace type.

If I were to invest into some cards, this would be my list:

I like to by players when they are alive. I know it sounds bad, but I know that when they pass away their cards will climb in value because of everyone trying to buy them at the initial hype.
1954 Topps Hank Aaron
1951 Bowman Willie Mays
1952 Topps Willie Mays
1948 Stan Musial

When Ali passes away, these cards will go up instantly. The UD's are way more rare and cost $$$.
1992 Pro Line Muhammad Ali / Cassius Clay Auto
2000 Upper Deck Master Collection Muhammad Ali Auto

Thanks for the advice, do you have any old prices on the Ali autos? I would like to pick up some cards that have dropped in price like 50% which is bascially everything but just want to make sure.

And perhaps as others have mentioned I might try a mutual fund since I beleive that is the best way to invest since i do not know anything about the stock market.

There is a Derrick Rose SPX away jersey RC up with a BIN $255, which is pretty good since without BIN's they are going for 240+.

Cashback helps on the price.

I was talking to Mike Masinick at CT and he refered me to a website that has a whole lot of information of sold prices on graded cards. Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey and Boxing Sports Card Value Price Guide based on prices realized in auction. FREE Email alerts on pending auctions at no cost to you. VintageCardPrices.com
The bad thing is the get the prices its like $13 a month, but if I am serious about investing a bunch it is worth it. I will probably go with a whole lot of vintage cards and just get a bunch of them on the cheap on auctions and then hold off on 1-2 years and hope that I can make 10-50% on them.

Here is an intersting Mantle auction. PSA 4 but it looks like its PSA 2 1952 Topps # 311 Mickey Mantle PSA 4 Rare High Number - eBay (item 190268354156 end time Nov-27-08 13:30:59 PST)

2007 Bowman Draft has been hovering around $525, that's a good price. 2008 Topps Chrome Football hasn't jumped yet like it should have. 2008-09 UD hockey Series 1 has as strong a checklist as any since 05-06 Series 2, it should be a good one. If you can get 2006-07 Upper Deck Series 1 hockey below $500 that's a deal too.

I see the raw pro-lines are selling around 270. Before they were selling around 390-415. I think it is a great investment. He doesn't have a bunch of certiified autographs floating around out there. I believe he also has a Classic auto, but the auto's normally look very faded. Also, I don't think he does any show signing anymore. Could be wrong, but I think his health has just gotten so bad he is unable to do them.

The UD's I do not have any prices. These cards were a UD backdoor special. Very rare and go for a ton of money.

Thanks for the help guys. On Ebay I only see an Ali dual auto that is an auction so I will see if I can get it for cheap. Like stocks it will be good to diversify. Any more suggestions?

For the stock market I strongly suggest you stay out of it, the drop is not over at all for now. Mutual funds are not good to do some daytrading, like it's what you want to do from what I understood. If it's for retirement plans and you can go with mutual funds, you will do the money on the long run. If you don't know the stock market, go with some companies you know that are healthy like Toyota motors for example. Even with those kind of companies, it will take time to be rewarded because you are not the only one looking for deals, they do also. We will probaly assist to many acquisition from the stronger companies, this will increase their risk and the stocks will drop or stay calm for a while until they concluded some benefits results of those acquisitions.

I think Canadian Banks are good picks since they have been dropped with the USA bank crash, but they are a way lot stronger (not in size, but in structure). They will for sure be profitable investments.

As for cards it will be a good period coming for buyers as many people will have money problems and we should see nice collections appears on ebay because people will need the money. Also card market will be hit first in this recession since it's more a luxury and not essential market. Less buyer will drop prices, as they already did from what you mentionned.

Another comment on the stock market. If you buy something, buy in chunks. Do not push allin in once. You should buy on the second rise of a stock also and on a strong purchase signal. Not on a drop, or not on the first rise.

Sorry if I'm hard to understand sometimes, english is not my first language.

I have to agree with you Mike. I am hearing that we have not seen the start of this market crash.

There is an authentic Ali and the seller has told me he would do it for $360 1992 PRO LINE MUHAMMAD ALI AUTO GAI CERTIFIED AUTOGRAPH - eBay (item 260313512571 end time Dec-09-08 14:32:14 PST)
Wish cash back it would cost me $252 @ 30% off. You think it is worth it at $360.
