Question How many peoples parents are divorced on here?

My parents have been fighting a lot. Its been ongoing for years now. My dad sleeps on the couch and ive been stressing a lot lately. It got pretty bad this week and my dads boutta move out soon. I should man up and not care so much cuz im already 18 but yeahh... Im taking a child sociology class in college right now and they said 47% of marriages end up in divorce or something. Is that true? That sounds like a lot.

Just curious to see how many members on here are divorced or parents divorced?

I was 13. When the time comes, I'll buy your first drink. Lifes not so great without your parents being together. Especially when you're young.

That statistic also hinges on the psycho's of the world who marry and divorce like its a fashion trend (see the Kardashian 75 day wedding). My girlfriends two cousins, one girl and one guy have 3 marriages between them, none lasting over 2 1/2 months and they are under 22.

Mine divorced when I was 8 years old.

You're about to enter a time period (right after college) when you'll see a lot of people who marry young get divorced pretty quick. I know a lot of people I went to college/grad school with went for the whole wedding right after school thing. It changes your perspective significantly on the institution of marriage.

Not gonna lie, it is tough out there w/ regard to this topic. Mine are together (34 years now)...but within just my father's side of the family (he has 4 brothers) there have been...let me count.... one divorce, two, three divorces, four divorces. One uncle w/ two and two others with one. Most with children, too.

I believe the "many marriages end in divorce" comment. Yes, it can be altered by those idiot celeb types who marry 5 times in their life, but it also happens a lot in the real world.

Sorry to hear it is stressful, we can't blame you for feeling that way. Keep your head up man.

My parents were common-law, they separated when I was in grade 7 or 8 and my brother was in grade 4 or 5. Rough time!

Canadians stay together longer because its a bitch to get out and file the papers when you have winter 9 months a year and the other three months the weather i nice and you get away from the other half while you can, then back to being snowed in

Yeah my parents divorced when I was like 3. It's really tough but in the end it worked out for the better. My stepfather is an awesome person and in some ways a lot better than my real dad. I know I learned the value of finding the "right" person to spend my life with.

My peeps split when I was 2 and my older brother was 6. It didn't affect me, but it was VERY hard on him.

I married at age 34, and was with my wife for 14 years before that. I didn't want to buy the cow when the milk was free, but all good things must come to an end.

EVERY one of my friends I hang out/hung out with came from broken homes.....unbelieveable

I am very fortunate that my folks have been married for 60+ years and the majority of our family have all had successfull marriages! You seem to have a good head on your shoulders, and I know it's easy for me to say, but right now you need to remove yourself from the situation as much as you can, and concentrate on school and your studies. It's a shame your parents are not taking this into account, as your future regardless of what they are dealing with should still be the most important thing to them ALWAYS!
Good luck I hope you get the support you need, and remember 18 yrs old is still young, and you seem to be dealing with this like the adult you are becoming

I read an article on the "misconception" of the idea that over 50% of marriages end up in divorce. It was an article in the Globe & Mail about a year back and I cant seem to find it.

Anyways... the misconception in the idea that the divorce rate is at 50% lies in the reasons as to why people get divorces. Of that 50%, 74% of them were true dirvorces based on differences and change in time. the other 26% was made up of;

Divorcing to avoid estate loss
Divorcing to avoid banktrupcies and creditor payment
Divorcing to avoid paying taxes
Divorcing to benefit from govt funded programs
and
Divorcing because we were drunk and didnt mean to tie the knot

Those were all the other reasons.

My parents divorced before I was two but both remarried, my mom has been remarried for more than 20 years now and my dad was remarried for just under 20 years before he passed away, so it's just about finding the right person

Myself I will celebrate my sixth wedding anniversary in September

But to the OP good luck and don't take sides just love both your parents for who they are to you and not their differences with each other

My parents are still together and have been for over 30 years.

It is fair to say the divorce rate is around 50%.

Getting married too young these days will heighten the chances of divorce, for a few reasons, the most significant ones lie in the finanical crisis and because people change in those critical years withing the 20's and not too mention infidelity. Not fact but just the imrpression I get.
