Default Transferring data from an external hd to a new laptop?

Just got a new hp laptop and I have to transfer the stuff on my external hd to my new laptop. It didn't come with much info on doing this and I know it is basically automatic, but does it put it in a new folder on the laptop or is there a certain area it will put it or ask me to put it. Thanks

Is the external hard drive USB? If so, connecting it to the laptop should pull it up as a D or E drive under Start > My Computer. Then, you can navigate to it the same way as the C drive, as a folder. In this case, you can copy the data wherever you want.
