Because thats the only event the Mayans were "predicting"... the solstice. What they viewed as one era ends, and a new one begins with this solstice. It will be the 13th time its happened.

Does everyone get this freaked out on December 31st each year wondering if anything comes next?

Yea iowa got dumped on, Cleveland steamer style... 8 inches in 10 hours or so, with blowing winds some spots are 12-14 inches , pretty shitty. Terrible timing for A LOT of snow with travels coming up for Xmas
