Default ESPN 30 for 30: "Broke"

Watching it right now, looks very interesting.

For those of you that don't know, it's about how athletes lose all their money.

I've always found it crazy for someone to "splurge" away millions of dollars....but it's happened too many times for retired athletes.

Anyways it's airing right now for those of you that are interested...

I'm not watching it but the reason atheletes go broke is because of what you said "splurging". They see all that money in front of them and spend it all now not thinking that they have at least another 40-50 years to live once they retire.

So when I see something about an athlete going broke I don't feel bad for them because they are the ones who made the decision of not to save their money or manage it wisely in the first place

It comes down to the fact that most of these guys have neither a sufficient education nor a good (familial) support system. Aside from that, others are just stupid in their decisions.

Also.....gold digging hoes!

LOL, not even joking....it's ridiculous how some women are only interested in leeching off rich men, especially athletes.

Once again ESPN has excelled in making these documentaries.

Very well made, very interesting, and it really shows the human aspect on people who we regard as being more than normal.

It was pretty amazing at the end seeing the long list of notable athletes that have gone bankrupt.

Put yourself in their shoes.

If all you had to do was have sex wouldn't you want to be a multi-millionaire?

Watching it as we speak, I can't believe an athlete's mother sent him a bill for 25k for raising him on his Bday.

My sympathy level is low for most guys – but I’m friends with enough Professional Athletes to realize how hard it really can be. Bernie Kosar was a good example – he wasn’t buying jewelry, cars, and paying for $5K bottles of liquor – his parents blew half his money as they were “handling” it for him and he made investments (I remember quite a few of his car dealerships and restaraunts in Cleveland) that went bad.

They made a good point as well about how many athletes really are thousandaires…not millionaires…after they pay for Taxes, Agent, Lawyer, Accountants etc…

Whatever you think an athlete makes you should just immediately cut that in half.

Those NFL rookies, that weren’t 1st or 2nd rounders that were maybe 4th rounders, making $800K are really making $400K – and their career span is a hell of a lot shorter then the rest of us.

So I don’t feel bad for guys like Andre Rison or Antoine Walker – but for some guys I do understand how they can go broke.

The one thing I thought should have been addressed (and maybe it’s just because of where I live) but if any Ohio State player didn’t make it in the NFL long enough to be “rich” they’ll have zero problem coming back to Columbus and getting a job. So to act like these guys are out on the street after they retire is a stretch depending on where they went to college.
