Now I have an iPod Touch (not the phone) and I love it, but I've heard conflicting reports about the iPhone in terms of the "phone" portion.
Looks like the best options according to CNET are the iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S3 and Motorola Droid. Not a huge data person but I've never really had a phone capable of much anyway so that could easily change if I find the right phone. Also, is the 4G upgrade worth it or go just with the wifi? Thoughts?

Not much of a data person? A Smartphone might not be your best option. You'll be spending at least $100/month with the limited data plans companies give out now. the 3G/Wi-Fi question is best for how you'd use your phone. 3G is great if you're out and about a lot and Wi-Fi is perfect for homebodies as long as you have a Wi-Fi network set up.
I've recently upgraded from a Droid to the iPhone5 since I just got an iPad and I can share the data plan with both devices. |

I have 3 Motorola Droid Razr Maxx in my family....we share data at 10gb per month, unlimited everything else. I go through Verizon at $235 a month once the smoke clears. I use the hotspot option on my phones in conjunction with my Motorola 500 LapDocks and its great.
Do your research, it's worth it. Especially with these long contracts. Good luck with your decsion. |

I guess it depends on your carrier. If with AT&T, my personal opinion on phone choices would be:
Google Nexus, iPhone 4S (yes, not the 5), iPhone 5, then the GS3. Each will have their own opinion based on experience. But the 5 isn't impressive enough to spend the extra $100 over the 4S, and the GS3 is a piece of junk, physically (plastic) and software-wise.

Why are iPhone 5's selling for $800+ on eBay?
A 16GB model with a 2-year contract is $199. Even if you don't attach a contract the phone would still be just $650.

The ones on eBay are factory unlocked which means they can be used on any carrier. You can get non-commitment phones from AT&T and Verizon, but I don't believe they are unlocked. Makes a big difference for someone on a small carrier or out of the country where the 5 isn't readily available (since GSM is a worldwide standard for the most part).

I started with a ipod touch when they first came out. I always said that if it had a phone feature I would be in heaven. When I was finally able to get an iphone and have the best of both worlds, I will never switch to anything else.

I own an iPod classic because I like having ALL my music with me and 64GB is not even close to enough. Secondly, I don't want to waste my battery listening to music (and the Classic has a much longer battery life). Third, it is way easier to change songs/playlists with the classic click wheel. I don't need to use shitty headphones or extensions with a control on it. I love my Classic and I will be sad when they axe it. It plays music like a champ. And, you know, Android is awesome for phones...
