Default Want to replace a wall outlet with this, but have a question?

I have normal wall outlets in my room, and i want to replace the one by my bed with this:
Power, Outlet: U-Socket, Dual Outlet/ Dual USB, 110V, TruePower - U-Socket Power Outlet With Built in USB Ports

Have iphone ipad and all and this would be easier.
Just wondering how i could find out if it would be possible in the one i have it at now? Only 19 and never replaced pne or seen one be replaced, so please let me know

I read it as you can replace any standard 3 prong outlet.

Run over to Home Depot and ask em how to install it.... Probably worth the extra $4 to buy it there and have someone explain it.

And yes, Corbin nailed it. Your current wall outlets should have a positive, negative, and ground cable once you unscrew it from the wall. If they don't (read, if your wall outlet doesn't look like the one in the picture, minus the USB ports), then I'd nix the whole project.

Its pretty simple. You also dont need to turn off the breaker. It doesnt hurt much. I changed every single outlet in my house and didnt turn flip a single breaker. I gues now that I think about it though, it kind of explains a few things. No, Im kidding but its really simple. Just need some strippers and dykes. Seriously.

This would be throwing caution to the wind, and not recommended.

You shouldn't even need strippers or dykes, as you're replacing an outlet that should already have the necessary wires stripped and dyked (sic).

I figured, will it be the same thing if the wall socket there now only has the 2 prong plugs?

No, cause 2-pronged outlets are missing the ground (the hole on the bottom of a three-pronged outlet). I guess as long as you're only ever going to use that outlet with cords that don't have the ground plug, then you'd be fine.

Throw the breaker - one wrong move and if the breaker doesnt trip your risking your life. 15-25 or 50 steps aint worth that.

Should be fairly easy to replace as assuming you do have three stranded wire (hot, black, and ground). Most newer housing should have this.

Do they both require 3 prong plugs?

yes they go into a three prong plug. It's kind of weird to explain but the adapter (6 plug adapter) has 1 three prong plug that plugs into the top outlet, then a "dummy" ground plug that goes into the lower outlet.

Now if your outlet is only 2 prongs...then I'm not sure if it's grounded...if it is grounded then all you need to do is take off the "ground" plug on the 6 outlet adapter you are putting in, including the dummy ground.

The "ground" plug is just attached and all you need to do is get a pair of pliers and wiggle/pull at the ground on the adapter I linked you to. Only do this if you know the outlet you are putting it into is grounded.

Everything we use is pretty much grounded so if the adapter is not grounded the wall outlet is...your electronics are grounded, etc...that is why you can pull the "ground" on the adapter you are using.

Yah....life is funny and reminds you it can own your ass in seconds on a whim

I was replacing outlets, screw driver slipped, I slapped wall in anger, clock fell, hit screw driver, forcing it over and into the socket, arm felt like it went flying across the room and I sit there thinking what just happened.

Breakers are a plus
