Default Hurricane Advice from a Hurricane vet.....

I live in South Florida and have lived through Andrew, Irene, Jeanne, Francis, Wilma (the worst in my area), etc etc... so with the pending storm in the NE I thought I would share some advice...

-Fill all cars with gas
-Have enough water for at least a week
-Fill your bathtubs in case no potable water is available elsewhere
-Freeze all food with an expiration date
-acquire at least 3 days worth of dry food (and up to a weeks worth of canned goods)
-have plenty of batteries and flashlights
-have a radio (battery powered).. this is for updates on where to get food, and believe me, you will need it to keep you sane lol
-charge all battery powered electronics to 100% life
-if you can, acquire a power generator.. if you cannot a BBQ will help
-find a safe or waterproof container to house all important documents (taxes, personal docs, etc etc)
-make as many bags of ice as you possible can. Store them in coolers where you can. This is to keep your drinks cold for as long as possible

If you do the above you will find it's a lot easier after the storm passes. If anyone else would like to add more to this please feel free. Good luck to all in the DC-New England area.

Great tips. I would have never thought of the bathtub idea. Wear I live the worst weather we get is probably storms durring the summer and blizzards in winter. I'd hate to have to deal with massive hurricanes and such. I just hope everyone is safe and prepared, and I think this thread can really help. Nice work Imac.

If you don't have any water, yes. You could also boil it on a grill or use it to cook with.

You can use it to flush your toilet.

Also, can buy this for potable water.

the bathtub water is encase the water is off for a week or more. You will need bath water, water to clean with, etc etc... I wouldn't recommend drinking it unless you are that desperate. That's what bottled water is for.

if you have time...get any important documents in a waterproof/fireproof safe...if not, at least make sure they are in a bunch of ziplock bags, easily accesable if you need to grab them

not sure how important it is, but i think it is

Unless you live in a pretty shabby built home you shouldn't have an issue with this. Loss of power and debris around your home and on the roads are bigger concerns.

I lived in a house with a screened in porch and a wooden fence when Wilma hit.. both were TKO'd, and my neighbor, father, and I all had to chainsaw a downed tree in front of my house.. but there was no damage to the house itself.

I would suggest not having your cards in an attic or basement just to be safe though.

Dang nature! You scary!

Okay but in all seriousness, I hope you guys stay safe. I live in Utah so I have no idea how it is for you guys. I would assume a little wet and windy...

I've actually gone out in the middle of a cat 3 storm... Imagine someone smacking you in the face.. about 50000 times per minute lol. I went out to save my neighbors car from a tree branch, then nearly got decapitated by a flying stop sign.. it was fun times.

I love going out in hurricanes! The eye of the storm is often the coolest part.

was in hurricane hugo in Charleston SC on the Navy base...watched it blow bricks off off of the surrounding buildings...not the most fun time of my life.

some good tips...I'd add to that list make sure you have your gun and ammo handy...after Hugo looting was rampant...and just look at what went on in New Orleans after Katrina.

I've lived through many hurricanes as well, I know exactly how the North East is feeling.

Great tips OP!
