no fees for the receiver, if marked as gift, but your address doesnt get sent to the recipient either.

If you send money as a "gift", the recipient will not get charged the usual paypal fees to receive money. If you send the same amount as "goods", pp will take their cut.

When you pay as a gift:
1)No fees are taken out
2)There is no buyer protection
3)The seller is not given your address

Be careful though... if its a normal transaction, you'll have no recourse if something goes wrong.

Would I be correct in thinking this question has come up because you've sold something recently?

I was also going to ask about this. I've been selling stuff on here for a while and never once was sent money as a "gift" instead of goods. However, recently a bunch of new members have paid this way. All of the transactions have been small and gone fine, but I've found it a bit odd. I assume several new people have arrived from other sites where they mostly send Paypal that way.

As a seller, should I have any concerns about taking payments as a gift? Since this has never come up before I'm worried there could be some scam I'm not aware of.

If you are buying, NEVER send as a gift. You are not covered.

If you are a seller I still wouldn't do it because even though the buyer doesn't have much recourse it's not worth the hassle of a buck or 2.

I had people use it this year when they paid me for my Survivor Pool.

I had about 60 "gift" payments of $25 ea.

I also paid my FF dues that way
