Default Buying my first handgun, need advice

So here's the short version,

I have been wanting to own a gun for protection for a few years now, never really had much of a reason before, wanted it "just incase"...

I work for and manage a Towing company, and my house is on the same lot as the business (where we have an impound lot as well). I don't want to live on the same grounds that we have peoples property, not to mention pissed of customers potentially knowing where I live without some sort of protection.

So I am looking to purchase my first handgun and was curious what you guys recommend. I don't want a pea shooter(.22) or a hand cannon(.50) something in the 9mm-.45 range possibly a .40

I have a budget of around 500-600, thanks in advance

m&p 45 or xdm 40 own then sub-compact xd-40 and use as my carry weapon, easy to clean and break down.....sights are very user friendly and the grips fit my hands well

If you want a good dependable handgun with stopping power and moderate cost, a Glock .45 or a Springfield XD .45 are great choices. I personally prefer the XD. A .40 in either model would be good as well.

I would probably avoid a 9mm for self-defense purposes.

Start with a revolver, way easier to use and maintain. Wish I would have kept my .357, gonna have to buy another real soon.

I was at a local gun shop yesterday and the two I leaned more towards were a springfield xd40 and a glock 22 (.40 with a longer grip)

would either be a good choice, I know how easy the glocks are to take apart and clean, are the springfields pretty easy too?

Xd's are super easy to break down and clean as I stated above takes less than 5 seconds to have one broke down once you get the hang of it.......

Springfield XD(M) Handgun - Gander Mountain

This was my Christmas present to myself, and I love it. I have put around 400 rounds through it over the past three days, and it has worked out great. This too is my first handgun. My best advice to you, is to go to your gun store and hold them. It has to feel right or you won't be comfortable with it.

I've heard a few people say the "M" in XDM just stands for "more money".

Just found a list of the differences when going from XD to XDM.
1.Adjustable backstrap
2.Match-grade barrel
3.No trigger pull required for takedown
4.Trigger supposedly a little better than the XD
5.More aggressive grip texture for better grip
6.Grip design change to ease accessibility of mag release 7.More aggressive slide serrations for better grip
8.More capacity than standard XD (3 more rounds?)
9.Triple-position Picatinney rail for more accessory adjustment options

Grip is different. It is more contoured. I personally like the XD service feel better, but it's still nice. The XD seems to have a more pronounced place for your shooting hand thumb.

Barrel on XDm is match grade. Ramp is polished.

Slide on my 9mm XDm is not square like my XD. It's sort of "shaved" on the top corners.

XDm slide just comes right off, XD you have to pull the trigger. Silly to care IMO.

The XDm trigger has shorter reset travel.

XDm you can change the backstraps to fit your hand. Again, the XD fits my hand perfectly so it's not a big seller for me.

If you are a good shot, go for the .45.

If you are a shitty shot, go for the 9mm.

If you can't hit what you want, it doesn't matter if you have a 1 shot hand cannon or not. Plus look at ammo costs. If you can get 300 9mm for the price of 100 .45 rounds, that is a no brainer. Range time costs.... but you need the skill if you are ever really stuck in a "situation"

This one should do the trick, plus, you won't need a gun safe!

Those are the two im looking at but im leaning towards the xd a tad more. The size is great you could have it for concealed or open carry. Do not get an xdm the main difference is it holds a few more rounds. Not worth an extra two hundred

Sig Pro 2022 in .40 cal.

This was my first handgun and arguably the best I've owned.

The range is outstanding, the kick minimal, and very fashionable.
Easily disassembled, cleaned and not one issue with it.
I conceal carry with no problems as well.
I've had it for 7 years now and fire often.

The one "con" is the safety is nonexistent.
The single action can be depressed though. Double action is obviously "safer".

Good luck with whatever you go with.

Prepare to wait awhile to buy one.

I paid off a pistol that I had on layaway last week Wednesday. I didn't get it till Monday. ATF is backed the eff up due to everyone buying guns. It usually takes 5 minutes to hear back on a background check. Took nearly a week

Yeah there are four pieces total. Three of those are in the slide. I would go for a Springfield over a glock just because I have shot both and the glock didn't have any type of safety.

Ditto, I'm a big Revolver fan. You can drop it in the mud, pick it up and it'll still shoot.

And there are some good advice in there.

P.S. - I like how your post is so informative about this topic.
