Default Books

What books do people read on here? I'm very much in to History books and other works of non-fiction. Growing up obviously I was into Harry Potter but growing up I haven't been able to get lost in a series or really any fiction based book. Also I've grown a huge passion for cooking so I go through like 3 or 4 cookbooks a week to get recipes that I think would be great.

Currently reading- Moneyball- Michael Lewis and The Six Wives of Henry VIII- Alison Weir.

Cookbooks I'm currently looking through- Saveur and Meat: A Kitchen Education

I think you'll find that most forum members don't know how to read.

I am currently reading Penn Gilette's new book - Every Day is an Athiest Holiday.

For history I liked:

The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson

I liked this because it was based pretty heavily on the history behind (1) The Chicago World's Fair in 1893 -- which is amazing to begin with and also (2) The story of HH Holmes an infamous serial killer that got his victims mostly through the boom of the fair.

I also liked the first 85% of The Art of Fielding before it just got weird.

I am reading Gone with the Wind now and it is so funny (I am serious -- it is making me laugh out loud it is so well written). Then I will be reading The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail — but Some Don't by Nate Silver.

For baseball I really like Dirk Hayhurst, but it is a lot of boy humour (so it gets old in the first book, the second one is better).

I am still trying to get through the second book of the hunger games, what an overrated piece of crap. I find things to do just so I don't have to read it. I got 100 or so pages left I think I will just force myself to finish it today and won't touch the third book.

Just started the last book of the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (and finished by Brandon Sanderson).

Also reading the Game of Thrones series (and I do not watch the HBO series).

And waiting for the second book of 'The Way of Kings'.

I generally read non-fiction and gravitate towards books on finance/investments, even though that is my industry. People have said I should "diversify" into non-related book genres, but I never do! One of my favorites was Traders, Guns and Money. Anyone would enjoy this book!

Back a few years ago though I was really into science/religion/theory....A Brief History of Time, etc. Related to that, a friend and I went to a Hawking presentation in Boston back in the day, and while waiting in the entrance of the theatre he came wheeling right through, about 2 feet away from me. That was pretty cool.

One of my all-time favorite books is one I read a while ago, called First Person Plural. That book = wow. Read it.
Generally looking for BGS-graded autographs of Andrew Benintendi from Topps/Bowman products

I'm a poetry guy (20th century and newer). Billy Collins is the best ever. I also enjoy Jane Kenyon, Donald Hall, Allen Ginsberg, Rita Dove, Molly Peacock, and occasionally I'll come across a local/upstate NY poet that I end up enjoying. I read an article in the newspaper yesterday about a local poet named Caroline Manring, whose first book is coming out soon. I'm looking forward to checking it out.
