MISC Buy/Sell section

How much of that stuff is just stolen merchandise? I work retail and when I come across something that goes on clearance I buy it just to resell it sometimes. I have noticed a lot of sealed stuff in that section. Some of it probably is acquired the way I acquire the few things I do. Some of it is probably gifts that someone received that they don't want(Shame on them ) But I also notice certain members ALWAYS have brand new sealed video games. At my job I work in a department that deals directly with theft/shrink. A lot of people there run some pretty big scams. Was just wondering your guys' opinion on the section

I've noticed that on Ebay too, you can almost always get brand new games right when they come out for $10-$20 less than retail from random Ebay sellers. Nobody will immediately resell them at a loss so they have to be getting them cheap from somewhere.

Some stuff was probably received at Christmas for gifts or stuff laying around that they want to sell.

That makes the most sense, especially around this time of the year.

It seems like selling gift cards at a discount is all the rage now in the Misc section.

I always stroll through the clearance section whenever I go shopping (especially in electronics). If I spot a complete steal, I'll snag it to either keep or flip...sometimes I end up sitting on it for too long and just want to dump it. I've had a few run-ins with trying to trade in new Movies/Games to a GameStop-type store. They want receipts to prove it's not stolen.

I watched a report last week that stated over $9 billion worth of stolen items are returned to stores in January because of 'after holidays' relaxed store return policies.

Items stolen throughout the calendar year are returned for retail refund disguised as the return of a holiday gift.

I brought this topic up because a few years back we busted a whole ring of thieves who had rented out an apartment strictly just for storing and selling their stolen merchandise. Obviously all the theft was not from our store, but from the amount of merchandise they had from various places they were making a business out of it. I figured it was being sold on Ebay and Craigslist. I assume some of it is sold on random forums like this too.

I have not seen 2012 statistics yet, but 2011:

Reported (United States) tractor trailer thefts:
1,215 occurrences
17% were electronics (food the most common theft)
$320,000 average value of load
Highest numbers: California, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Texas

I kid I kid. Not starting that haha

It's insane though the amount of crazy people out there who do truck break ins like that. First thing that comes to mind is the fast and furious movies when they do their truck break ins.

States with large seaports. Doesn't Illinois have large port(s) along the Great Lakes? I'm not familiar with the geography of the area and how the canal connects in to the lakes.

A 'cartel' was caught in Florida a few years ago. They had two man crews (outside of the surveillance work) that stole rigs when truckers stopped. One guy had a tractor near by and a second stole the tractor and trailer. The stolen trailer was then attached to the cartel tractor and alterations made to the trailer. I can't remember the timetable, but it was fast.

The surveillance guys figured patterns and knew exactly what trucks carried what.
