Here is some incredible footage of the Meteorite that hit in Central Russia. It was said to be 10 tons and comprised mainly of iron. Over 1000 people injured from broken glass etc. There was said to be a hugh 'aftershock' felt for over 125 miles away!
Some pretty scary #@#@#@#@ when you think this could happen anywhere at anytime! This is the real Armageddon!! ??????? ??? ??????????? - YouTube http://youtu.be/90Omh7_I8vI Last edited by TASS; 02-15-2013 at 03:03 PM. |

Wow.
On a side note, metorites can fetch a ton of money. I wonder who was out there first to look at the impact site?

The meteorite was estimated to be about 50' in diameter and it mostly broke up upon impact with our atmosphere (that's what the blast came from). Amazingly on the same day, a much larger object (160' diameter asteroid) passed by relatively close to earth (within about 2 earth diameters from the surface). It's the bigger object astronomers have been observing for the last year, but now it's the smaller one that's making the news.

The meteor exploded at an altitude of 15-30 miles with a force of 0.1-1.0 kilotons. The pressure wave damaged about 3000 buildings. Most of the injuries were from broken glass. The sonic boom or shock wave would have started when it entered the atmosphere at 33K mph. Since sound travels relatively slow the boom 'trails' the object. Cool stuff! (well not for the Russians).

yeah this thing was going at 19 miles per second...stop and think about that for a minute and wrap your brain around it...think of where you are sitting right now, then think of a place about 20 miles away from you...and you are there in 1 second. That thing was hauling a$$.
