If I told you there was a professional sport like this would you watch it?

-Faster paced than basketball and football.

-More contact than football.

-Legal fighting.

-Very, very good officiating.

-Usually under two hours game length.

Yes, I watch Hockey, but the idiots who run the NHL ruined it for this country with the lockout in 04-05 and nobody cares about it for the most part anymore, I just happen to live in one of the few American cities that still loves it no matter what.

Long Live Hockeytown!!!

Hockey is fun to watch but I the fact that there are not many goals scored usually can take away from it.

Just trying to figure out why it is the least popular sport in America when based on everything I laid out...it should be the most popular with Americans.

But that's the best part...the puck battles, the jamming in front of the net....the up and down the ice...

because it's not on TV anymore

It used to be on ESPN regularly as well as covered extensively on Sportscenter.

But when ESPN dropped them after the lockout, people just stopped caring as it was never shown to the masses.

There are a few cities that still somewhat care about it, like Chicago, Boston, NYC, but for the most part, Detroit is the only American city where it's still loved just as much as it was before that lockout

Heh...no.

And yes it is on TV...there is a game on NBC or NBC Sports Network nearly every night.

That is actually a big issue for non-hockey fans, it's really hard for them to sit down and just follow a game

But for someone like myself who grew up watching it, it's really not hard to tell what's going on and where the puck is

It definitely is an acquired skill though

On TV in the sports world is being on ESPN, I hate that, as I hate that network, but unfortunately that is just the way it is

I don't buy that either. Just as in any sport the camera focuses on the player with the ball (puck.)

Not enough people grew up playing it. I worked in the front office of an NHL team for 5 years and still don't fully follow hockey, other then my team, because I never played it.

Now that is a great point.

I don't know anyone here in New England who didn't play pond hockey when they were a kid.

I'll tell you why I hate hockey.
-As someone mentioned, it is tough to follow. After years of watching sportscenter I still can't follow often.
-It isn't fast-paced, at least to me. To me fast-paced means fast, seesaw scoring.
-Fights. I could care less to watch fighting, if I wanted to I could watch UFC
-Local fans... nobody seems to care around here despite two NHL teams.
-Most importantly, every game seems the same. I've watched maybe 10 games start to finish and couldn't tell you a single thing about any of them. It might not be this way to a real fan but casual fans are what make money and it is very boring to watch hockey for the first time. I love baseball, and believe you could argue the same about it being boring at first, but I believe tradition alone carries it and once a true fan it is a tough sport to leave.

For what it is worth, I enjoy watching MLB, NFL, soccer, and some NBA. I could care less about college football and basketball, ufc, golf, and tennis. I dislike hockey, boxing, and nascar.

I enjoy hockey and watch a pretty decent amount, especially when it's on regular NBC. The lack of scoring is really a turnoff, as well. Really, there's not a lot of excitement in games.

It's also an insanely expensive and inconvenient sport that eliminates much of the population from participating in it. Equipment is costly and ice time is hard to come by and if you want to rely on pond hockey, there are many places where ponds don't freeze and if they do its only a couple months out of the year.

Fighting is what makes hockey the sport with the most integrity, respect, and honor. Without it, hockey would look like the NBA on ice.

Hockey is the greatest sport on earth, and by far the best spectator sport. There isn't a bad seat in any nhl building.

Very well said. A guy dives in basketball? Can't do anything about it. A guy dives in hockey (cough MONTREAL cough) he gets his nose knocked in.

I've really been getting into Hockey lately, especially with the buzz around the Blackhawks. I can watch a whole game, it is hard (For me) to follow the puck though. I love the pace it's at and I like watching the occasional fight as well. I think it's easier watching a hockey game than any other sport minus football.

I don't watch fighting.

Soccer, basketball, hockey, football, all pretty much the exact same game.

Baseball > Football > Basketball, that is all I can really handle.
