Default What do people say when you tell them you collect sports cards?

Not a lot of people know I collect and I don't really go out of my way to tell people. Just wondering what people usually say to you guys when you tell them?

My parents say it's waste of money. My friends tell me Magic the Gathering cards are more valuable and fun (their ploy to get me to play). Yeah, most people I know say it's a waste of money . Except for the time I pulled a Newton auto, then they told me I got lucky

My friends make fun of me and say it's a waste of money, I don't really go out of my way to tell people, but I don't really hide it either

I usually only hang out with people that also collect cards haha. Don't really mention it to my other friends at all.

They don't say anything..... Because I tell them I collect, and then add "SUCK IT!" and they don't say anything back.

This is the usual reaction...."Really? I didnt know they still made sports cards? Huh!" lol it is quite funny how often people don't even realize baseball and football cards are still around.

Always get something along the lines of, "Sports cards are worth something?"

In a way it makes sense. The industry is pretty niche when you go deeper than just "sports memorabilia" which is a more recognizable term for most people.

most people don't see how/realize how much money is in cards. they think that it's something that kids collect and see cards as very cheap stuff .50 to a few dollars a card. they have no idea what kind of money goes into high end hits or why i would pay $100+ a box. i never try to get people into the hobby, i just try to explain the reason why I am willing to spend hundreds on a particular card. i mostly just try to equate it to whatever investment they are in to, whether it be stocks or comic books, beanie babies, or whatever. it's a hobby to me. but i also don't let on how much money i've spent over the years. most people wouldn't understand putting thousands into sports cards until they have a deeper understanding of the hobby.

It seems like nobody in my town collects sportscards. No hobby shop or nothing. Im 27 and I feel like a weirdo for looking at retail boxes at target with the little kids next to me looking at the pokemon packs or whatever they are.

The other day I got a new one: "Have you tried claiming the money you spend on cards on your taxes? My husband can take a hobby credit for hunting, maybe you can do the same for your cards?" I'm pretty sure the hunting thing is because Louisiana fancies itself as "Sportsman's paradise" with hunting/fishing.

But usually it is, "How many cards do you own?" or "What's the most valuable card/most you've ever spent?" or "Oh man I used to have Sammy Sosa's Topps rookie card!"

I don't tell people. I keep it a secret, because anytime someone from the post office asks what's in the package I'm sending out/picking up its always "I used to have cards...I think I still have some...you think they're worth anything?"

I only look for retail boxes if I'm with my girlfriend or it's after 11 pm. No exceptions.

I used to tell anyone that asked what I did for fun/hobby. But after 5 or 6 people decided I was going to be their resident "expert" and brought me TONS of early '90s base to sift through for them ... I stopped informing everyone of my passion for this! That's why I'm on these forums! You guys understand

they ask me if their cards are worth anything.
i ask them what years they might have.
they usually say 80's-90's.
i say there might be one or two worth $10 or so.
then they tell me to get bent.
then i say... hey that saying was from the 90's and is worthless now too.

Nothing - because I don't tell them.

No, I'm kidding.

Same as what most have said -they're surprised it even still exists, surprised at how much it has changed (once I explain the industry now vs. 20 years ago), etc etc.

I tell them that it is both a sport-related interest (for example, keeping PC players from local teams, etc) and gambling-related, becauase let's face it, busting $1000 cases and throwing dollar after dollar into group breaks really is in a sense a type of gambling.
