Default Golfing for the first time..... tips?

So my company is holding a golf tournament and I was suckered into joining. I've never golfed and know zilch about the sport. The tourney is a " 4 man scramble format" whatever the heck that means. It's just for fun but there will be prizes but hasn't been announced what they will be. Anyone got some tips for me??

yea,

1. Cheat for the longest drive. What you do is place the marker the furthest and close to a hazard. This way no one can really out drive you or else it would be out of bounds lol. (Yea someone did that at our last tourney beside water. If you clear the water it would be a 400 + yard drive).

2. Dont cheat at the closest to the pin contest. Winning the longest drive and closest to the pin is taking it too far. Most people who can hit the monster ball usually dont have a good short game and suffer using high number clubs. lol.

3. since you are with the company, buy a round and dont be a cheap skate

I golf on the regular. Fun sport. Make sure to streach your back muscles they are going to be sore the next day.

Go to the driving range and hit a few balls so at least you can get a feel for hitting a golf ball. They will usually have a club or two you can use.

Just watch some clips of Charles Barkley, do what he does.

Golf and tennis are the only sports that make me feel like an awkward bastard. I avoid them both at all costs.

Keep your head down with little movement. Bring your club back with your left arm staying fairly straight(assuming you're a righty). On your down swing, try to go straight back down and not "over the top" or else it will fade to the right.

Besides that, bring lots of golf balls and just go out and enjoy it with your coworkers.

Also, a 4 man scramble means all 4 of you hit, you pick the best shot out of the 4, and then all go hit from that spot. You always all hit from the previous best shot, so if you have a few bad shots, it doesn't hurt your team at all. If its your first time golfing, Im guessing you'll be putting first to show them the lines, so make sure to hit the practice green before you play to start getting the feel of the speed of the greens. That would be a big help to your team if they had a good first putter.

Don't over swing. If you don't try to kill it you will hit it straighter.

Swing away!

I've only played on a full size course a few times, I mainly play par 3's on weekends, but it's fun to just let it rip on those long holes. I'm wildly inaccurate, but every so often you hit a beauty and it more than makes up for any bad holes. In a strange twist of fate I have never got a single birdie on a full course, but I have 2 eagles.

Grip it and rip it!!...walk 10 feet and do it again

I use to play 2-3 times a week and got to a point where I at least wasn't embarrased to go out with others. Over the last couple years I've only been playing two scrambles a year. One for the local fire department and one for our union. Missed them both this year.

Between kids, time, and money I just haven't been able to get out recently.

Just go out to have a good time. If you stress about playing good it will usually make you play worse.

When is it? Do you have time to take in some cheapo lessons with a buddy? As others have said, you just need to get to where you have a clue what you are supposed to do and not necessarily be a pro.

After tons of scrambles, Ive always asked myself if people actually did these things. Itd be easy money, but oh so low of someone. Id love for the hosts to put people in the woods on these holes to watch the honesty of the awards, aha.

Go to a driving range that has a green and work on your putting. If you playing with others on your team that have played, your probably wont be able to add much on the tees or fairways, but you can help your team on the green. Work on speed and tempo of your putting, don't worry about reading the green, just trying to move the putter to the ball in a pendulum manner. The better players on your team can the use your putt to help them adjust to the speed of the green and the read any brakes in the putt.

I played at the GM and Honda golf tourney where they give away a car if you get a hole in one at a certain par 3. They had cameras set up at the Longest closest to the pin and hole in one at the par 3s. Not sure about the longest yard though.

Dont know if anyone cheated, but they announced the winners but didnt announce anyone that cheated.

Thanks guys, love the humor. For those that mentioned practicing kinda too late for that the tourney is Saturday. I originally wasn't even thinking of joining but the HR guy at work needed more people to complete the teams so I was a good sport about it and went ahead and joined. Hope the $30 are worth it, I'm sure I'll have a blast just saw the list of teams and I'm sure at least half have never golfed either so it makes me feel a little better.
