Default Looking for DVR recommendations - Tivo? Others?

So I have basic cable and the "expanded pack", no digital stuff or a cable box. Use a dvd & blu ray and a roku. Still tape w/vcr...well up to the other day. Had a power outage and somehow it fried the VCR and a lamp timer (I know weird)

Well looking around to see what people have since it would just be dumb to try and look for a vcr and I don't need a combo dvd/vcr.

I found a decent tivo at best buy on sale for $99, but I see you have to pay for a year of service ($15/month) and I possibly may need other crap from Cox to get it working right.

Anyone have experience with it and if I did get it, could I essentially cancel my cable in full and have access to the channels like espn, cartoon network, comedy central and amc through the tivo as that would rock or would I need to keep my cable which is nothing and costs me nearly $100/month w/internet service!

If I went with another brand of DIY dvr's what is needed for those besides a decent hard drive and a hook up?

The net and reviews only get you so much info. So I’m here on a chat board asking you...the people

Threaten to leave your TV provider. We don't pay the $15.99 per month to Comcast for the DVR.

Just get one from your cable company, just will be easier and end up probably cheaper than most options

I have DirecTV, never had a problem, and they charge $10.00 a month for a DVR Reciever. Though I am sure I pay more monthly than you, because I have one of the higher packages for the extra sports channels...

just based on the cox site:

$10/month just to have dvr service
$8.50 month to rent a dvr receiver

This doesn't include that I will have to upgrade to digital too. (downgraded to coax years ago - and just really want to get rid of cable all together one of these days!)

I may have to go chit chat with them at lunch to get the skinny.

Thanks for the posts so far.

Buy a Hulu Plus subscription. $8/month. If you have Xbox or PS3 you can use that to stream to you TV or hook up your computer to your TV.

went w/cox and just got their dvr.

they managed to "close" my account and transfer all the info to the wife's name as a new account and waived the dvr fee for 6 months and no install fee. sure we now have a 2 year contract, but I was doing that anyway, we get 5x faster internet and better tv for the same price.

Thanks for all the info, good food for thought for down the road.

The main deal for keeping stupid cable is AMC and HLN and a few other stations.

Have netflix and 2 rokus (and netflix on the bluray)

She's already in love w/on demand.
