I received my bachelor's in finance in May 2012. It seems the only job I can land is insurance sales. Not interested.

I've got my Accounting Degree (minor in CIS) with my CPA license...

Not sure what your question is but it's amazing how many people just say "finance" without a specific direction (not saying you are doing that)

Agree, but I believe that is what OP is getting at; I shot him a note talking about how "finance" can mean so many different things. Believe that is part of his "exploration" at this point.

That would make sense.

Blows my mind (although it wouldn't have in HS) the amount of people that just assume the word "Finance" is all encompassing - when it's a specialty.

Any questions I'm around OP.

Why he had mentioned earlier is what I am exploring, as far as future profession. I know I want to be somewhere in the field, just not sure where.

Yeah - that makes sense.

Go into Accounting - for multiple reasons - but trust me it's the best field to get into if you're looking into the "business" part of the world.

OP, what do you picture yourself doing more? Executing and sending (blah) OR having the opportunity to interact with people on a regular basis? Accounting is a great field to dive into, but keep in mind that to be successful at all, you pretty much need to work in public accounting (Big 4 experience a big plus) where you'll be doing Audit or Tax (yay!!!) for the first 2-3 years and working ridiculous hours for meh pay. During that time, you should be able to obtain your CPA. The upside to this is that the exit opportunities are great from what I understand. Also, I know plenty of individuals that went into Accounting and absolutely hated it. Food for thought.

Interacting and using analytic skills to help predict economic trends and analyze current trends would be something I would greatly enjoy.

Depends if you go the economics route...would you be more interested in looking at the economy as a whole or on a more smaller scale (e.g. individual companies or people/households). The latter would point you more towards being a microeconomist (general term). Or are you more interested in studying the economy on an industrial scale? Decisions, decisions.

As far as Finance goes, the school I went to broke it down into three subcategories:

Corporate Finance (Issues facing the manager of the firm can be corporate asset selection and valuation, restructuring, working capital management, etc. Main goal = maximizing shareholder wealth.)

Financial Management of Financial Institutions (i.e. banking industry. This mainly deals with credit lending, asset/liability management, and capital adequacy problems. A strong understanding of how financial markets work is first established.)

Investments (Understanding techniques in financial analysis, valuation of equity and fixed income securities, derivatives (used to combat risks) and foreign exchange fluctuations. The second area focuses on the concepts of portfolio management, practices of institutional money managers, and specific portfolio evaluation techniques)

Some advice if you're still unsure about which route to take, see if you can ask someone for an informational interview man. This is the best way to find out what the hell people really do haha. I know some or most of the above may have a vague understanding, but hopefully it can give you a little insight to both fields and answer some of your questions.
