not a fan of windows 8, but if the machine has the capability to do everything you need it to do, you did good.

my gf got a chromebook once I convinced her she didn't need Microsoft Office for her school work. Cheap machine that does everything she needs.

I really like Lenovos, looks like that's a nice one.

Touch screen makes all the difference with Windows 8. If you don't like it, you can upgrade to 8.1 which addresses a lot of the problems people have with 8.

What's it matter what we think if you've already bought it?

You might want to return the warenty and get a warranty, instead. Or at the very least, make sure the spellcheck button works.

He's from Michigan, thats how they spell up there.

1. Most of the warranties are not worth it.
2. If you're a student, which I suspect you are, you can get Office pretty cheap, like $30 cheap.
3. It's an ok price, I would've gotten something else. I paid $329 for a laptop for my wife over a year ago and it's great. A cheap laptop with a SSD is more than enough for most people.
4. Don't listen to me, I have an expensive MacBook Pro with a SSD and a ton of RAM. I do have a lot of PC's in the family as well.

disagree. It depends how much you paid and who you purchased it from. Laptops are made horribly now.

You're entitled to your opinion. Maybe for someone without even basic computer knowledge it COULD be worth it. I'm assuming OP paid around $140 for it based on the total purchase price.

How much was it?

oh yes exactly. As you stated with your wife's computer ($329) it is not worth it. As I said it depends on the store, such as Staples because they now use Square trade warranties. Especially since some companies warranty that battery which is now built under the casing of the laptop.

If the computer is a throw-a-way (under $400) they aren't worth the warranty.

The red is the main factor in the warranty discussion. Let's say that a 2 year warranty accidental is $200 and somebody drops the computer and cracks the screen. To you (I'm assuming) or me, it's no big deal. Last year, I replaced for Toshiba screen for a grand total of $75.

Well, I'm making some assumptions but here is how I came to my opinion.

$589
- $140 (Office)
- $140 (Warranty)
- $45 (Tax)
= ~$300 laptop

For a $300 laptop I wouldn't buy a warranty, but that's me. And yes, I can handle all repairs on my own. Even your average student these days can handle battery replacements, OS reinstalls, imaging, etc. So many good youtube videos and online tutorials availably. My kid built a computer at 14 with some minor assistance from me.

Bingo on the prices, as far as the warranty goes, eh for my first laptop, I just wanted to be safe you know, I'd much rather have a professional repair rather than myself, yes it know there are very helpful videos, but for my first one, why not get the warranty haha

I appreciate the feedback

Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus is just $10 for qualified email addresses | ITworld

FYI. Also check with your school bookstore.

A few more tips..

1. Use Chrome.
2. Download, install and update ComboFix. Run this from time to time.
3.

Is this a serious question? Most people have plenty of access to YouTube aside from their primary PC.

And many problems don't cause catastrophic failure.
