Default Funeral attire, what is okay to wear?

So my wife and I are attending a funeral for a good family friend who was killed riding his bike the other day. My question to you all is....

I don't have a suit, never really had the need for one. What attire would be appropriate without a suit? Would it suffuce to wear a Dark Gray dress shirt, Black Slacks, dress shoes and a dark tie? Or is the Black shirt kind of a necessity in this case paired up with gray slacks?

I have no idea as I've never been a person to dress up too often, so any tips would be appreciated

RIP Jeff

The first outfit you described would be fine. There's no need to wear all black.

that's kinda what I was thinking as well. They never mentioned anything about casual etc, but Jeff was a very laid back and fun guy. The family had a memorial at the site he was killed at and encouraged people to ride their bikes there (He was a professional type biker who belonged to a race team etc)

You'll be dressed fine with your first option. As long as it's not Hawaiian shorts, an 'Amateur Gynecologist' t-shirt, flip flops and a straw hat, you're good.

As long as you have black leggings, you could wear the shorts, too. Get some of those socks with toes, in black, and you'll be good to go. As far as the hat goes...pass it around for a collection for the family.

I'm almost getting serious.

BTW, condolences on your friend, OP.

As others have said, you have the right idea. It's all about respect and not calling attention to yourself.

Anyway, you'll see girls there in too-short skirts.

Don't worry too much. Any office/business attire with netural/dark color is fine. The main thing is to show up on time.

I've noticed attitudes change over the years even seen people wear jeans. I think simply being there and paying your respects is becoming more important than the attire.

So here were my choices, I went with option 2 because the darker shirt felt entirely too baggy around the arms despite being the same size. The lighter was a slim cut shirt

I figure everyone has seen me in my make a wish thread anyways, do I've got nothing to lose!

Either are fine.
I would recommend finding a decent suit for such occasions. Buy one and you'll never have to worry about this in the future.

2nd option, for sure; the first looks like you borrowed it from your big brother.

Nothing wrong with it at all; It's the thought that counts, and you're obviously putting thought into your attire, so good for you.

We need to see a picture of you wearing the banana hammock to make the final decision. One with the top hat and one without...

The banana hammock sounds more like an under the clothes attire type thing!

I do a lot of eulogies for the family (they have started requesting me :-\ ) and the view from the podium is different from the pews. You notice less as a speaker than you do as a spectator. But the biggest view difference is the view from the coffin. The deceased doesn't care what you're wearing.

I've had to stop at a funeral enroute to the airport before. The family knew I was on my way out of town and I showed up in khaki shorts a polo, and tennis shoes, made my rounds, paid my respects, and left. 30 minutes tops. No one gave me any flack.

My condolences on your loss.

I don't know if I'm right but isn't the tie suppose to be all black(mostly black) not too many prints?

If it was me I would go with blk slacks, blk dress shoes, a solid shirt(probably white would work best), all blk tie, maybe a light blk jacket, and some sunglasses & hat(something that goes with a suit) not a new era hat or anything like that.
